Introduction

A dramatic late 20th-century British naval oil painting by A. E. Phillips depicting the Royal Navy Type 42 guided-missile destroyer HMS Sheffield (D80) battling through the immense rolling seas of the South Atlantic during the Falklands War.

Phillips presents Sheffield in starboard profile, her distinctive superstructure, radar arrays, domes and hull number D80 carefully articulated against a turbulent maritime setting. Towering waves break against the bow as the vessel drives forward beneath a threatening grey-blue sky.

The contrast between the highly detailed warship and the elemental violence of the surrounding ocean creates an evocative image of a vessel whose name became inseparably associated with the human cost of the Falklands conflict.

Catalogue Note

HMS Sheffield (D80) was the first of the Royal Navy's Type 42 guided-missile destroyers and the second Royal Navy vessel to carry the name of the city of Sheffield.

Built by Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering at Barrow-in-Furness, she was launched by Queen Elizabeth II on 10 June 1971 and commissioned into Royal Navy service in February 1975.

Following the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands in April 1982, Sheffield joined the British naval task force dispatched to the South Atlantic.

On 4 May 1982, whilst operating with the task force, Sheffield was struck by an AM39 Exocet anti-ship missile launched from an Argentine Navy Super Étendard aircraft.

The attack caused catastrophic damage and fire aboard the destroyer. Twenty members of her company were killed and many others injured. Sheffield was subsequently abandoned and sank whilst under tow on 10 May 1982.

The loss of HMS Sheffield became one of the defining episodes of the naval campaign and demonstrated with devastating clarity the threat posed to modern surface warships by sea-skimming anti-ship missiles.

Her wreck is a designated protected place under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986.

Rather than depicting the destruction itself, Phillips portrays Sheffield still underway in the South Atlantic, giving the composition a particularly poignant quality when considered against the ship's subsequent fate.

HMS Sheffield

HMS Sheffield was approximately 125 metres long and displaced around 4,100 tonnes at full load. Designed principally as an air-defence destroyer, the Type 42 class centred its principal anti-aircraft capability upon the Sea Dart missile system.

Sheffield's distinctive early configuration included exhaust deflectors above the funnels, commonly nicknamed "Mickey Mouse ears", intended to direct hot gas-turbine exhaust away from aerial equipment.

The ship's motto was Deo Adjuvante Labor Proficit, generally translated as "With God's help our labour is successful", while she was affectionately known within the Royal Navy as "Shiny Sheff".

Captain James Salt assumed command shortly before the Falklands deployment.

The Artist

A. E. Phillips was a British artist with an evident specialist interest in naval and maritime subjects.

The painting retains an original printed card bearing the artist's name and former Pinner, Middlesex address. The card also carries the handwritten title Sheffield Snaps 'Em Green and the inscription "Best wishes".

Phillips's treatment combines careful observation of the destroyer's naval architecture with a highly dramatic interpretation of the South Atlantic. Particular attention has been given to Sheffield's hull number, radar installations, weapon systems and distinctive silhouette.

The turbulent sea and storm-laden sky provide a deliberately forceful counterpoint to the comparatively precise rendering of the ship.

Offered in good vintage condition consistent with age and previous display.

The painted surface displays some age-related craquelure and localised spotting/foxing. The composition remains clear and strongly presented, with the principal naval details and maritime colouring retaining good visual impact.

The silver-finished wooden frame displays general age and handling wear including scuffs, chips, localised losses, previous repairs and areas of minor paint retouching, particularly towards the upper edges.

The reverse retains the artist's original card and subsequently mounted historical documentation relating to HMS Sheffield.
