A magnificent early 19th-century French bronze group depicting three lively sea putti gathered around a young Triton sounding a conch shell.
Dating to approximately 1820, this substantial sculptural group is modelled in the manner of Claude Michel, known as Clodion, and combines the playful sensuality of the French Rococo with the classical taste that remained fashionable during the Restoration period.
The central marine putto raises a conch shell to his lips while his companions twist, climb and embrace around him. Their interlocking poses create a dynamic composition intended to be appreciated from multiple viewpoints.
Finely modelled anatomy, animated expressions and rhythmic movement give the sculpture remarkable vitality. The warm brown patina is enriched by areas of naturally developed verdigris and subtle surface variation, contributing to its authentic antique character.

In classical mythology, Triton was the marine son of Poseidon and Amphitrite. His conch shell was traditionally used as a trumpet whose sound could summon or calm the waves. By presenting Triton as a child surrounded by putti, the sculptor transformed the mythological subject into a joyful and decorative celebration of the sea.
The energetic arrangement of the figures recalls the work of Claude Michel, known as Clodion, whose sculptures are celebrated for their fluid movement, playful mythological subjects and graceful combinations of putti, nymphs, satyrs and Bacchic figures.

The Artist
Claude Michel, known as Clodion, was born in Nancy in 1738 and died in Paris in 1814. He became one of the most admired French sculptors of the later 18th century and was particularly celebrated for his intimate terracotta groups.
Claude Michel developed a highly recognisable sculptural language combining classical mythology with the movement, elegance and sensuality of the Rococo. Putti, nymphs, satyrs, fauns and Bacchic figures frequently appeared within his animated compositions.
His work was especially admired for its softly modelled forms, rhythmic movement and joyful interpretation of antiquity. These qualities remained influential after his death, encouraging later French sculptors and bronze founders to produce works in his manner.

Condition Report
Presented in good original antique condition with a rich brown patina, areas of naturally developed verdigris and surface variation consistent with age.
The bronze displays historic wear, rubbing and tonal variation across the raised areas. These characteristics form part of its naturally aged appearance and contribute to its individual character.
The sculpture is unsigned, and no foundry mark has been identified. No apparent structural problems have been observed.
There are some losses and tears to the protective fabric lining on the underside. The lining could be replaced if desired, although it has been retained as part of the sculpture’s existing presentation.
Due to the sculpture’s considerable weight, careful professional handling is recommended.
