Important Victorian Marine Oil Painting of the Harland & Wolff Jute Clipper Slieve Roe off Calcutta | Attributed to Lai Fong (Fl. 1870–1910)

⚓ Subject & Medium

An important late Victorian marine oil on canvas depicting the celebrated British iron full-rigged merchant clipper Slieve Roe under an impressive spread of sail during her voyage from the Port of Calcutta (present-day Kolkata), one of the principal commercial gateways of the British Empire.

The vessel is portrayed broadside in elegant starboard profile, advancing confidently across lively open water beneath an expansive sky illuminated by drifting blue-grey cloud formations. Every aspect of the ship has been rendered with remarkable care, from the towering masts and extensive canvas sail plan to the intricate standing and running rigging that defined the engineering achievements of nineteenth-century deep-water sailing vessels.

The ship's name, Slieve Roe, is clearly inscribed on the bow, while the British Red Ensign flies proudly astern accompanied by an attractive arrangement of signal flags that introduce vibrant accents of colour against the restrained maritime palette. Small crew members can be seen upon the deck attending to their duties, while the ship's boats remain secured amidships. In the far distance additional sailing vessels punctuate the horizon, conveying both scale and the busy international shipping lanes surrounding colonial Calcutta during the height of global sail-powered commerce.

Executed in oil on canvas during the late nineteenth century, this impressive work is both an accomplished marine portrait and an important historical record of one of Britain's most distinguished merchant sailing ships.

🎨 Composition & Technique

The artist has constructed a beautifully balanced composition in which the majestic clipper dominates the foreground while remaining perfectly integrated within an expansive maritime landscape.

Exceptional draughtsmanship is evident throughout. The vessel's hull proportions, spars, yards, rigging and complex sail arrangement have been recorded with impressive nautical accuracy, demonstrating the specialist knowledge expected of the finest nineteenth-century marine painters.

The sea is animated through confident layered brushwork, creating convincing movement within deep green-blue waters broken by lively white-crested waves. Above, a broad atmospheric sky painted in subtle graduations of blue, grey and soft cream introduces natural light across the sails, producing depth, luminosity and realism.

A restrained palette of cool marine blues, olive greens, warm ivory canvas and rich ebony tones is enlivened by flashes of crimson signal flags, resulting in a composition that possesses both outstanding historical significance and exceptional decorative appeal.

👨🎨 About the Artist

This painting is attributed to Lai Fong (Fl. 1870–1910), among the finest Chinese marine artists working during the closing decades of the nineteenth century.

Originally active in Hong Kong before establishing himself in Calcutta, Lai Fong became renowned for producing highly accurate portraits of merchant vessels entering and departing one of the British Empire's busiest commercial ports. Working directly from the docks, he developed an enviable reputation for documenting the great sailing ships that connected Britain with India, Australia and the wider world.

His works are admired for combining meticulous technical precision with artistic sensitivity, qualities that continue to attract collectors of maritime art today. Comparable examples are represented in museum collections including the Merseyside Maritime Museum, while further works have appeared in the catalogues of leading international auction houses such as Christie's and Bonhams.

🚢 The Ship – Slieve Roe

The Slieve Roe ranks among the finest examples of Britain's great iron merchant sailing ships built during the final golden age of commercial sail.

Constructed by the renowned Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast and launched in 1878, she was commissioned for James Sinclair's famous Sinclair Line of Ulster, a fleet recognised for operating some of the fastest colonial clippers of the Victorian era.

Registered in Liverpool under Official Number 78862, the vessel measured approximately 257 feet (78.3 metres) in length with a beam of 38½ feet and registered 1,749 gross tons. Her iron construction represented the very latest advances in shipbuilding technology, combining exceptional structural strength with increased carrying capacity and speed.

Purpose-built as a three-masted full-rigged jute clipper, Slieve Roe served the demanding long-distance trade routes linking Britain with India, Australia and South America. She became especially associated with the flourishing Calcutta jute trade, transporting British manufactured goods outward before returning with valuable cargoes including raw jute, tea and other commodities essential to Victorian industry.

The vessel quickly earned an outstanding reputation amongst mariners for both reliability and speed. During an outward passage to Calcutta in 1883 she reportedly sailed approximately 1,500 miles in only five days, sustaining an impressive average of sixteen knots for over twenty-three consecutive hours—an extraordinary achievement for a commercial sailing vessel of her day.

Later acquired by Simpson Brothers, Slieve Roe continued her distinguished career and established an impressive twenty-eight-day passage between Melbourne and Callao, further enhancing her reputation as one of the fastest deep-water merchant ships of her generation.

Following more than three decades of service across the world's principal trade routes, the vessel was broken up in 1910, bringing to a close the remarkable career of one of Britain's most celebrated colonial clippers. Today she remains well documented within maritime archives, historical shipping registers and specialist publications devoted to the great age of sail.

🔍 Condition Report

Presented in good antique condition, displaying the honest character and surface qualities expected of a late nineteenth-century oil painting.

The canvas exhibits an age-related network of stable craquelure together with scattered foxing, light stretcher impressions and evidence of historic conservation. The perimeter has been professionally strengthened with strip lining, providing additional structural support without compromising the original composition.

There are areas of sympathetic historic restoration and selective overpainting, together with isolated paint losses visible under close examination. The varnish has mellowed naturally with age and, should the next owner wish, the painting would benefit from a light professional clean to further enhance colour and tonal clarity.

The later gilt and ebonised frame displays minor age-related wear including small scuffs, chips and rubbing consistent with careful handling over time, while continuing to provide an attractive period presentation.

Overall, the painting displays extremely well, combining strong decorative presence with considerable historical importance.
