A compelling original abstract watercolour by Adrian Heath (1920–1992), an important figure in the development of post-war British abstraction.

Signed and dated “Heath ’65” lower right, Form in Motion was created in 1965 and demonstrates Heath’s mature investigation of colour, geometric form, movement and spatial relationships.

Verticals, diagonals and angular elements interact across the composition, establishing a carefully controlled visual rhythm. Warm ochres and earthy siennas contrast with slate blues and steel greys, while charcoal blacks provide structural weight and softer creams introduce areas of light and openness.

Form in Motion exemplifies Heath’s sophisticated approach to abstraction during the mature phase of his career.

The composition is structured through intersecting vertical, diagonal and angular forms which appear to advance and recede across the sheet. This interaction produces a palpable sense of spatial tension without reliance upon conventional perspective or recognisable subject matter.

Heath exploits the versatility of watercolour through fluid transparent washes, dry-brush textures, gestural passages and more sharply delineated forms. Layers of translucent pigment give the composition depth while preserving the immediacy characteristic of a work on paper.

Colour plays an equally important structural role. Warm ochres and siennas establish an earthy foundation, cooler slate blues and greys provide contrast, and areas of charcoal black give weight to the composition. Cream and ivory passages introduce visual breathing space.

Although abstract, the forms invite associations with architecture, human figures and movement without becoming explicitly representational.

The Artist

Adrian Heath (1920–1992) was a significant British abstract painter, writer and teacher whose career played an important role in the development of post-war abstraction in Britain.

Born in Burma in 1920, Heath later moved to Britain and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London.

During the Second World War he served in the Royal Air Force and was subsequently held as a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft III. During his captivity, he met Terry Frost and encouraged Frost’s developing interest in art.

After the war, Heath increasingly turned towards abstraction. His mature work concentrated upon geometrical relationships, pictorial space, balance and rhythm and was informed by European abstraction and Constructivist ideas.

Artists including Jean Hélion and Victor Pasmore contributed to the wider artistic context in which Heath developed, although his combination of structured geometry and lyrical movement became distinctly his own.

Heath exhibited regularly at the Redfern Gallery in London and in 1953 published Abstract Art: Its Origins and Meaning, an important articulation of his ideas concerning abstraction.

His work was associated with significant exhibitions of post-war modernism, including This Is Tomorrow at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1956 and documenta II in Kassel in 1959.

Alongside his own practice, Heath taught at institutions including Bath Academy of Art and Chelsea School of Art.

His works are represented in major public collections including Tate, the Arts Council Collection and the British Council Collection, securing his position within the history of British modernism and post-war abstraction.
