Introduction

An evocative Victorian landscape by John Cuthbert Salmon (1844–1917), signed and dated 1870, depicting a peaceful river within the picturesque countryside near Capel Curig in North Wales.

The painting captures a wonderfully tranquil passage of the Welsh landscape. A rocky riverbank occupies the immediate foreground before giving way to still reflective water, mature woodland and the softened forms of distant mountains.

A simple rustic fence crosses part of the opposite bank, providing a subtle human presence without disturbing the predominantly natural character of the composition.

Salmon's treatment of reflected light is particularly appealing. Golden, green and earthy tones shimmer across the quieter central water, while cooler highlights articulate stones and faster-moving shallows.

The work is signed “J. C. Salmon” lower right, with the date “1870” positioned immediately beneath the artist's signature.

The reverse additionally bears an old historic handwritten inscription identifying the subject as “Near Capel Curig, N. Wales”, providing important physical evidence for the historic identity of the landscape.

Catalogue Note

The mountainous landscape of North Wales occupied a special position within 19th-century British landscape painting.

Its combination of mountains, wooded valleys, rivers and rapidly changing atmospheric conditions offered artists subjects capable of combining close natural observation with the romantic qualities traditionally associated with the British landscape.

Salmon's interpretation is notable for its restraint.

Rounded stones and broken water establish the foreground before the composition opens into a reflective central stretch of river surrounded by mature woodland.

The distant mountain is partially obscured by trees and atmospheric recession, giving the composition a convincing sense of depth.

Light plays an important role throughout. Warm reflections animate the central water, while carefully positioned highlights across stones, branches and foliage provide definition within the darker woodland.

The result is both topographical and atmospheric: a carefully observed Victorian interpretation of the North Welsh landscape.

The painting retains an important old handwritten inscription to the upper reverse identifying the subject as “Near Capel Curig, N. Wales”.

This inscription is separate from the later collection and auction labels and provides historic physical evidence for the title used in the present catalogue.

The reverse additionally retains a collection label associated with the Famous Lord Hill Museum, Shropshire.

A later Adam Partridge Ltd Lot 1925 label from The Cheshire Saleroom in April 2025 also remains attached.

Adam Partridge's auction documentation records the painting as John Cuthbert Salmon (1844–1917), signed, 30 x 44 cm and framed. Their catalogue transcribed the title as Near Canal, North Wales.

The historic inscription physically attached to the reverse identifies the location as Near Capel Curig, N. Wales, and that title is accordingly retained here.

The Artist

John Cuthbert Salmon (1844–1917) was a British painter associated with the 19th-century landscape tradition.

The present work demonstrates a sensitive understanding of atmospheric perspective and naturalistic landscape composition.

Detailed foreground passages establish texture and immediacy, while softer treatment of the distant terrain creates convincing recession. The reflective river provides the central visual focus, connecting the rocky foreground with the wooded landscape and mountain beyond.

The artist's signature and date remain clearly visible upon the painted surface, with “J. C. Salmon” appearing above the date “1870” in the lower right.
