Catalogue Note

The painting presents a compelling portrayal of traditional Cornish maritime life, concentrating upon a fisherman engaged in the everyday task of removing a substantial curved fishing hook from the mouth of his catch.

The fisherman wears a dark broad-brimmed hat, thick green knitted seafarer's jersey and red neckerchief. His full beard, prominent moustache, weathered complexion and ruddy cheeks convey the appearance of an experienced working fisherman accustomed to the demanding conditions of coastal employment.

His gaze is directed downwards towards the fish, while his hands carefully manipulate the hook. The pale silvery body of the fish contrasts with the darker greens and browns of his clothing.

Behind him rests a traditional round wicker fishing basket, while additional freshly caught fish lie upon the wooden deck.

Beyond the vessel, grey-green waves rise and break beneath an overcast sky. Seabirds circle overhead, while the distant sail of another fishing boat appears near the horizon.

The artist's handling of the fisherman's face, knitted clothing, fish and surrounding waters demonstrates an interest in both individual character and the practical realities of traditional fishing life.

Particularly appealing is the contrast between the fisherman's quiet concentration and the restless sea, giving the composition a distinctive narrative quality.

The precise identity of the fisherman, the vessel and the coastal location remain unidentified.

The Artist – Richard Harry Carter (1839–1911)

Richard Harry Carter, also recorded as Richard Henry Carter, was born in Truro, Cornwall, in 1839.

He was the son of John and Elizabeth Carter. His father was a naval pensioner, and Carter's early employment included work as an apprentice stationer and subsequently as a clerk in a copper office in Truro.

He developed his artistic career during the nineteenth century, producing coastal landscapes, maritime subjects and scenes of traditional working life.

His earliest recorded works date from the 1860s.

Carter exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and other established British exhibition venues.

In 1866, he married Ellen Dunn in Truro, who subsequently pursued a career as a music teacher.

By 1884, Carter was living in Falmouth, where he continued painting Cornwall's coastal scenery and maritime communities.

He also contributed illustrations to J. T. Tregellas's 1879 publication concerning the people and traditions of Cornwall.

By 1891, Carter had moved to London, where he held an exhibition entitled The Shetland Isles at Arthur Tooth & Sons in the Haymarket.

He subsequently lived in Petersfield, Hampshire, before returning to the West Country.

In 1895, Carter participated in the opening exhibition at Newlyn Art Gallery, exhibiting watercolours of Cornish coastal subjects.

His inclusion in specialist publications concerning Newlyn artists establishes his association with this important artistic community.

By 1901, Carter was living as a boarder with a fisherman and his family at Sennen Cove, near Land's End.

This documented connection with a working fishing household is particularly relevant to his interest in the everyday lives and occupations of Cornwall's maritime communities.

During his later career, Carter increasingly worked in oils, having previously been particularly associated with watercolour painting.

In July 1904, he travelled to Holland with fellow artist Walter Langley, visiting Volendam on the Zuider Zee, where they encountered an international community of painters associated with the Hague School.

Carter's paintings are represented in British public collections, including the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro and Falmouth Art Gallery.

He died at Sennen, Cornwall, on 7 February 1911, aged 71.

Original Signature and Historic Label

The painting bears a dark signature reading R. H. Carter at the lower right.

The signature is consistent with the attribution recorded in the painting's documented auction history, although no independent authentication has been undertaken.

The reverse retains a fragmentary historic printed exhibition or sale label.

The surviving printed fields include Exhibitor's Name, Address, Title and Price.

The handwritten title appears to refer to a fisherman, although the surviving inscription cannot presently be transcribed with certainty.

A handwritten price may read £25 in pre-decimal currency, but this interpretation remains provisional.

The original issuing exhibition society, gallery or institution has not yet been identified.

The label is of particular historical interest because its format suggests that the painting may have been submitted to an organised exhibition or offered through a gallery or artistic society.

Its presence was already recorded in the Lay's Auctioneers catalogue of May 2021.

Further archival research may establish the original exhibition venue, date or catalogue title.

Exhibition History

A fragmentary historic exhibition or sale label survives on the reverse of the painting.

The printed fields for exhibitor's name, address, title and price suggest a possible earlier exhibition or gallery-sale history.

The issuing institution, exhibition date and catalogue number remain unidentified.

Carter is independently documented as having exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and Newlyn Art Gallery.

He participated in the opening exhibition at Newlyn Art Gallery in 1895.

These references relate to Carter's wider artistic career and do not establish that the present painting appeared in any particular exhibition.

Further research into historic Cornish exhibition catalogues and the archives of the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and Newlyn artistic institutions may clarify the label's origin.

Frame and Presentation

The painting is presented in a later traditional oak frame with a narrow gilt-coloured inner slip.

The dark, warm-toned wood complements the muted greens, browns and greys of the maritime composition.

The frame displays age-related wear, including surface marks and minor losses consistent with its previous use.

The precise framing date and maker remain unidentified.

The reverse retains the wooden stretcher and historic label fragment.

Dimensions

Framed: 67 cm Wide × 90 cm High × 2 cm Depth.

Canvas: Approximately 60–61 cm Wide × 82–84 cm High, based on earlier auction catalogue measurements.

All measurements are approximate.

Condition Report

The original oil painting is presented in good overall antique condition, commensurate with its considerable age.

The painted surface retains its detailed maritime composition and visible artist's signature, with extensive age-related craquelure, surface discolouration, staining, abrasion and localised paint loss, particularly around the fisherman's hat.

Stretcher-bar impressions are visible near the canvas edges. The reverse retains its wooden stretcher and fragmentary historic exhibition or sale label.

The later oak frame displays general wear, including scuffs, scratches, minor chips and small losses consistent with age and handling.

The painting's conservation and restoration history is unknown, and the stability of the paint surface has not been independently assessed. No professional conservation or technical examination has been undertaken.

Please examine the detailed photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description.
