Introduction
Moonlight breaks through drifting cloud and falls across Loch Ness in this evocative Scottish landscape from approximately 1950.
The ruins of Urquhart Castle appear quietly illuminated beside the water, framed by dark trees, a curving shoreline and distant Highland mountains. The silvery reflection crossing the loch becomes the principal source of light within the composition, drawing the eye from the shadowed foreground towards the historic castle.
Monogrammed “T B”, the painting remains the work of an unidentified British artist. Its romantic treatment of light and place has previously encouraged an association with James Bell Anderson, although no direct prototype or documentary connection with that artist has been identified.

The unknown painter constructs the scene through a carefully controlled contrast between obscurity and illumination.
In the foreground, rocks, heather and earth are built from deep brown, green and ochre tones. Two tall trees rise from the left-hand side, their trunks and wind-swept branches creating a powerful silhouette against the brighter sky.
The shoreline forms a gentle diagonal as it recedes towards Urquhart Castle. This curve provides a visual path through the painting and prevents the foreground from becoming impenetrably dark.
The castle occupies a relatively small area of the composition but remains its historical and emotional focal point. Restrained pale highlights distinguish its walls and towers from the surrounding hills.
Moonlight is distributed across both sky and water. Silver-grey and muted blue passages create the impression of light passing through cloud before settling upon the surface of Loch Ness.
Small horizontal touches across the water suggest broken reflections, giving the loch luminosity without disrupting its prevailing stillness. Warmer sandy and ochre colours along the shoreline provide contrast with the cooler nocturnal palette.
The treatment of Urquhart Castle reflects the long Romantic tradition of presenting historic ruins as places of memory, mystery and the passage of time.
The castle itself was a major medieval stronghold. It was garrisoned for the final time following the Revolution of 1688 and deliberately damaged in 1692 to prevent its future military use. By the 19th century, the ruin had become admired for its dramatic position beside Loch Ness.
The Artist
The painter represented by the monogram “T B” remains unidentified.
The work has previously been described as painted after or in the style of James Bell Anderson. No specific Anderson composition corresponding to this Loch Ness view has been located, and “in the manner of” is consequently the more appropriate catalogue terminology.
James Bell Anderson was born in Edinburgh in 1886 and received his artistic training at the Edinburgh School of Art. He also studied for four years at Hospitalfield in Arbroath under George Harcourt before attending the Académie Julian in Paris.
In 1912, Anderson established himself in Glasgow, where he developed a successful career principally as a portrait painter. His sitters included significant figures from Scottish political, civic and professional life.
He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1932 and a full Royal Scottish Academician in 1937.
Although Anderson occasionally produced subjects beyond formal portraiture, the present painting should not be represented as a direct copy of a documented work by him. Its attribution remains with the unidentified monogrammist “T B”.
