Introduction

A finely observed Victorian equestrian portrait by John Grant, apparently dated 1887, portraying a smartly dressed gentleman riding a bay horse through a formal London park landscape.

The rider is shown in profile wearing a black bowler riding hat, dark fitted riding coat, pale breeches and high black riding boots. Holding the reins and a riding crop, he maintains an upright and composed seat as the horse advances at an energetic extended gait.

Grant has treated both subjects with considerable individuality. The gentleman’s facial profile is carefully delineated, while the horse is depicted with close attention to its conformation, musculature, movement and tack.

The resulting image has the character of an individual equestrian portrait rather than a generic sporting scene.

Catalogue Note

Grant gives the horse the dominant pictorial role, placing its long, energetic stride across much of the width of the canvas while retaining the controlled profile format characteristic of Victorian sporting portraiture.

The bay horse is carefully modelled, with particular attention given to its head, musculature, bridle, bit, reins, saddle and other elements of the tack.

The gentleman above is equally individualised. His facial profile, black bowler riding hat, formal riding clothes, gloves, crop and upright seat suggest that Grant was recording a particular rider rather than simply introducing a conventional sporting figure.

Neither the gentleman nor the horse has presently been identified, and no speculative identification is proposed.

Beyond the foreground iron railings lie open grassland, mature trees and a distinctive group of distant park buildings and structures. The restrained greens and earth tones of the landscape contrast effectively with the rider’s dark clothing and the warm bay colouring of the horse.

The Artist

Biographical information concerning the 19th-century equestrian painter John Grant remains limited. His place and date of birth, artistic training and formal exhibition history have not presently been established with certainty, and care is required to distinguish him from other artists bearing the same name.

He is nevertheless represented by a small but coherent group of recorded equestrian paintings.

Christie’s catalogued Passedix, a Brown Racehorse with Jockey Up as the work of John Grant (fl. 1886). Other recorded works include Carriage Drawn by Two Horses in Hyde Park, signed and dated 1887, and Jockey à cheval, signed and dated 1895.

Together these records indicate an artist active in British sporting and equestrian painting during the closing decades of the 19th century.

Hyde Park and Rotten Row

The setting is believed to depict Hyde Park, London, probably around Rotten Row.

This interpretation is supported by the broad prepared riding track, characteristic iron park railings, open grassland and fashionable equestrian character of the scene.

Of particular relevance is Grant’s separately recorded Carriage Drawn by Two Horses in Hyde Park, which is signed and dated 1887. The fact that Grant painted another identified Hyde Park equestrian subject in the same year provides important comparative support for the proposed location of the present painting.

The Hyde Park and Rotten Row identification nevertheless remains a reasoned scholarly interpretation rather than documented provenance and is catalogued accordingly.

The Rider and Horse

The identities of the gentleman and horse have not presently been established.

Both are treated with considerable individuality. The gentleman’s facial profile is carefully delineated, together with his black bowler riding hat, fitted dark riding coat, pale breeches, high boots, gloves and riding crop.

Likewise, the bay horse is portrayed with close attention to conformation, colouring, movement and tack.

These characteristics suggest that Grant may have been recording a particular gentleman and his horse, potentially as a commissioned equestrian portrait. Without documentary evidence, however, no identification of either rider or horse is presently proposed.

Recorded Comparisons

Christie’s, 2 July 1998, Lot 130: John Grant (fl. 1886), Passedix, a Brown Racehorse with Jockey Up, signed “J. Grant” lower right, oil on canvas, 38.1 x 45.7 cm.

A further recorded work, Carriage Drawn by Two Horses in Hyde Park, is signed and dated 1887 and is especially pertinent to the proposed Hyde Park setting of the present painting.

A signed and dated Jockey à cheval of 1895 provides additional evidence for Grant’s continuing equestrian practice into the 1890s.
