Introduction

A striking British aviation oil painting by G. Wiltshire-Smith, depicting Concorde G-BOAG in connection with the final commercial Concorde flight from New York JFK to London Heathrow on 24 October 2003.

The painting commemorates one of the defining moments in modern aviation history, when British Airways Concorde service formally came to an end following nearly three decades of supersonic passenger travel.

Concorde is presented in elegant side profile against a vivid blue sky, with the aircraft occupying the visual centre of the composition. The precision of the fuselage and distinctive delta-wing silhouette is contrasted with softer, more expressive treatment of the cloud formations, creating an effective balance between technical accuracy and atmosphere.

The work is particularly appealing as both an aviation subject and a record of the end of an extraordinary era of commercial flight.

Catalogue Note

The painting presents Concorde in a clean side-profile composition, flying high above the Atlantic beneath a luminous blue sky.

Wiltshire-Smith gives particular attention to the aircraft itself. The streamlined fuselage, slender nose, swept delta wings and red British Airways tail markings are carefully rendered, creating a convincing sense of the speed and technological sophistication for which Concorde became famous.

The surrounding sky is handled more freely, with expressive cloud textures creating atmosphere and depth while retaining the aircraft as the dominant visual element.

The palette is predominantly cool blue and white, with silver-grey tones across the aircraft and strong red accents at the tail. The simplicity of the colour scheme allows the silhouette of Concorde to remain immediately recognisable.

The overall effect is both dramatic and restrained, capturing the elegance of one of the most iconic aircraft ever placed into commercial service.

The Final Commercial Concorde Flight

On 24 October 2003, British Airways Flight 002 operated from New York JFK to London Heathrow, marking the final commercial Concorde service between the two cities.

The flight represented the closing chapter of nearly three decades of scheduled supersonic passenger service.

Concorde had become a defining symbol of speed, technological innovation and luxury air travel, connecting major international destinations at supersonic speeds.

The final New York to London service therefore became an important moment in aviation history and remains one of the most recognisable events associated with the retirement of Concorde.

This painting commemorates that transition through a carefully observed portrait of the aircraft itself.

The Artist

G. Wiltshire-Smith is a British self-taught artist associated with aviation and maritime subjects.

His work demonstrates a strong interest in technical subjects combined with atmospheric landscape and sky handling. In aviation paintings, particular attention is given to the silhouette, proportions and distinctive characteristics of the aircraft.

The present painting demonstrates this approach, combining careful rendering of Concorde with more expressive treatment of the surrounding sky.
