Overview

An exceptional original oil on canvas by the acclaimed contemporary British realist painter Trinidad Ball, painted in 2012 and entitled Together.

This beautifully observed coastal composition depicts two figures walking quietly across an expansive shoreline at low tide beneath a luminous sky and tranquil sea. Rather than portraying a recognisable location, Ball creates a timeless meditation on companionship, reflection and the restorative qualities of the natural world.

The immense openness of the landscape, uninterrupted horizon and delicate reflections across the wet sand combine to produce an extraordinary feeling of calm, allowing the viewer to experience the quiet rhythm of the coastline. The two distant figures become the emotional centre of the composition. Their presence is understated yet deeply affecting, suggesting shared experience without narrative constraint. It is precisely this ambiguity that gives the painting its universal appeal, inviting every viewer to discover their own interpretation of togetherness, memory and peaceful contemplation.

Executed in oil on canvas with remarkable technical assurance, this work exemplifies Trinidad Ball's mature style, where refined realism is combined with atmosphere, restraint and emotional sensitivity. It is a painting that rewards prolonged viewing, quietly revealing new subtleties of light, colour and emotion over time.

Composition & Technique

The composition demonstrates Trinidad Ball's exceptional understanding of balance, light and visual harmony.

The landscape has been reduced to its essential elementsโ€”sea, sky, shoreline and reflectionโ€”allowing every subtle tonal transition to contribute towards the painting's remarkable atmosphere. Broad horizontal planes gently guide the eye through the composition, while the diminutive figures introduce a quiet human presence without disturbing the overwhelming sense of serenity.

Ball employs a sophisticated palette of silvery greys, muted blues, warm taupes and delicate sandy neutrals. Thin translucent oil glazes create remarkable luminosity throughout the sky and shoreline, while carefully controlled brushwork allows the sea to dissolve almost imperceptibly into the distant horizon.

Rather than relying upon dramatic colour or elaborate detail, Ball achieves emotional impact through simplicity. The restrained composition, subtle tonal relationships and masterful handling of light create a work that demonstrates why she has become one of Britain's most respected contemporary realist painters.

Artistic Context

Together is representative of contemporary British realism at its most restrained and contemplative.

Rather than documenting a specific coastline, Ball explores universal themes of companionship, solitude and quiet reflection. The painting demonstrates how contemporary realism can achieve emotional depth through careful observation rather than dramatic narrative.

The simplified composition recalls the long tradition of British coastal painting while remaining unmistakably modern in its sophisticated tonal restraint. The subtle relationship between the expansive landscape and the two distant figures transforms an ordinary walk along the shore into a timeless meditation on human connection and the restorative qualities of nature.

This balance between technical refinement and emotional resonance has become one of the defining characteristics of Trinidad Ball's mature work.

Why Collect This Work?

Together represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire an original work by one of Britain's most accomplished contemporary realist painters.

Painted during Trinidad Ball's mature period, the composition perfectly encapsulates the qualities for which her work has become so admired: refined draughtsmanship, sophisticated tonal harmony and an exceptional sensitivity to atmosphere. Rather than relying upon dramatic narrative, Ball allows subtle changes in light, space and scale to create an emotional response that is both immediate and enduring.

The painting also benefits from excellent documentary integrity, retaining its original titled and dated artist's label together with its original gallery backing board. Combined with its traceable provenance through a respected specialist auction house, these surviving elements considerably enhance its appeal to collectors.

Equally successful as both a serious collector's piece and a sophisticated interior statement, Together possesses a timeless elegance that complements both traditional and contemporary settings. Condition Report

Presented in acceptable original condition, this painting has been carefully preserved and displays beautifully.

The original oil surface remains stable and well preserved, retaining its delicate glazes, refined tonal transitions and subtle atmospheric palette. There is no visible evidence of restoration, overpainting, canvas repairs, flaking or structural instability under normal inspection. Close examination reveals only a few surface scuffs and some fine scratches consistent with careful handling and the age of the work.

The original painted wooden gallery frame is also in very good condition, displaying the expected minor signs of age and handling, including occasional light scuffs, small paint losses and a few discreet edge knocks, most noticeable around several corners. Historic touch-ins to isolated areas of the frame are sympathetic and unobtrusive and do not detract from its overall presentation.

The reverse retains both the original titled and dated artist's label together with the original Ingo Fincke Gallery & Framers backing board, providing excellent documentary provenance and further supporting the painting's history.

Overall, this is an exceptionally well-preserved original example by Trinidad Ball that presents exceptionally well and is ready for immediate display or addition to a discerning private collection.
