🦌 Antique Danish Silver Plate Repoussé Hunting Game Platter, c.1880s – Attributed to the Style of Cohr
Subject & Medium
This rare Danish silver-plated platter showcases a richly detailed repoussé hunting scene, typical of the Victorian taste for sporting motifs. The wide border is alive with wild boar, pheasants, and rabbits in high relief, embodying the energy and artistry of 19th-century silverwork. Crafted in silver plate over copper or base metal, it combines the brilliance of silver with the resilience required for table service.
Composition & Technique
The central plain surface was intended for carving and presenting meats, while the broad repoussé rim brims with naturalistic detail. Executed using the traditional repoussé and chasing technique — hammering from the reverse and refining from the front — the craftsmanship is evident in every feather, muscle, and scroll of foliage. The result is a striking balance between function and ornament, making it both a serving piece and a work of art.
Attribution
Unsigned and unmarked, as was common for Danish silver plate of this era, the platter nonetheless reflects the distinctive style associated with the workshops of Carl M. Cohr. Renowned as one of Denmark’s leading silversmiths, Cohr’s designs blended technical mastery with rich decorative flair. This piece is therefore described as in the style of Cohr, reflecting its likely connection to that circle of production.
