Introduction

A monumental signed and dated marble portrait of James Robert Creighton (1844–1896), twice Mayor of Carlisle, sculpted in London in 1895 by Léon-Joseph Chavalliaud (1858–1919).

Carved in solid white marble and weighing approximately 100 kg, the bust possesses an imposing physical presence entirely appropriate to the civic stature of its sitter.

Chavalliaud combines close physiognomic observation with the elevated language of academic portrait sculpture. Creighton’s distinctive moustache, elongated sideburns, deeply modelled eyes and resolute expression are balanced by a sweeping classically conceived mantle enveloping the shoulders and chest.

The result transcends straightforward likeness, presenting Creighton as a figure of civic authority and permanence.

Catalogue Note

The sculpture demonstrates Chavalliaud’s command of both individual portraiture and monumental academic composition.

Creighton’s head is subtly turned from the frontal axis, enlivening the portrait while preserving its formal authority. Deeply modelled eyes with drilled pupils contribute an especially concentrated expression.

The sculptor varies the treatment of the marble intelligently. Smooth facial planes contrast with the more textured carving of the moustache, sideburns, ears and recessed areas.

A broad mantle sweeps across the exposed upper chest and shoulders in substantial overlapping folds. This classically conceived treatment removes the sitter from ordinary contemporary fashion and situates him within the established academic tradition of commemorative portraiture.

The reverse and less visible surfaces remain more roughly worked, preserving the hierarchy of finish characteristic of sculpture conceived principally for frontal and three-quarter presentation.

The bust is dated 1895, one year before Creighton’s death. Chavalliaud later produced the portrait relief for the publicly subscribed Creighton Memorial in Carlisle, erected in 1898.

Although the precise relationship of the present marble to the later memorial remains unestablished, its date demonstrates that Chavalliaud had already formulated a sculptural likeness of Creighton during his lifetime.

The Sitter

James Robert Creighton (1844–1896) occupied a prominent position within the civic life of late-nineteenth-century Carlisle.

A businessman, long-serving city councillor and twice Mayor of Carlisle, Creighton participated in the municipal life of the city during an important era of Victorian urban and cultural expansion.

Following his death in 1896, public subscription funded a permanent memorial in Carlisle. Chavalliaud was responsible for its portrait relief.

The Artist

Léon-Joseph Chavalliaud (1858–1919) was a French sculptor who established a substantial professional presence in Britain during the late nineteenth century.

His practice encompassed portrait busts, commemorative works and architectural sculpture. His British production demonstrates the combination of French academic discipline with the particular demands of Victorian public and institutional patronage.

Condition Report

Presented in stable antique condition with surface characteristics consistent with its 1895 date and considerable scale.

The important portrait passages retain strong definition. There are scattered chips, abrasions, scratches, surface pitting, ingrained dirt and areas of tonal variation and staining.

Localised edge losses and rubbing are visible upon projecting folds of the mantle and around the lower marble support.

The reverse is considerably rougher in finish and displays pronounced brown/orange staining and accretion beneath the rear overhang and across portions of the supporting marble.

No obvious major structural break through the principal bust is apparent from examination and the available photographs.
