Introduction

An important mid-Georgian oil portrait depicting Captain Gamaliel Nightingale (1731–1791), a distinguished Royal Navy officer whose active career encompassed the Seven Years’ War and whose name remains perpetuated through Nightingale Island in the South Atlantic.

The portrait was catalogued by Bonhams as a work by John Simmons (Nailsea 1715–1780 Bristol).

Nightingale is presented half-length in formal naval uniform, his youthful face emerging against a restrained dark background.

The rich blue of his coat, brilliant white linen and gilt details establish both rank and professional identity while creating an elegant example of Georgian naval portraiture.

The work possesses an unusually interesting documentary history, with earlier identification and auction evidence preserved physically on its reverse.

Bonhams catalogued the painting directly under John Simmons, rather than using the weaker attribution terminology previously associated with the work.

The surviving Bonhams catalogue record identifies the portrait as:

John Simmons (Nailsea 1715–1780 Bristol), Portrait of Captain Gamaliel Nightingale, half-length, in naval uniform.

The reverse retains evidence of at least two separate Bonhams catalogue appearances, together with an older handwritten sitter-identification label.

These surviving elements form an important physical documentary archive for the painting.

The Sitter — Captain Gamaliel Nightingale

Gamaliel Nightingale was born at Kneesworth, Cambridgeshire, on 15 February 1731.

He entered the Royal Naval Academy in 1744 and subsequently served aboard HMS Rippon and HMS Porcupine.

After passing his Lieutenant's Examination in 1752, he became Lieutenant in 1753.

Further appointments included HMS Hind, HMS Falcon, HMS Wager, HMS Prince George and HMS Dublin.

On 3 August 1757, Nightingale became Commander of HMS Badger.

On 18 October 1758, he was promoted Captain and appointed to HMS Vengeance.

The Seven Years’ War

Nightingale's command of HMS Vengeance placed him within the major naval conflict of the Seven Years’ War.

In 1759 he was involved in the events surrounding Quiberon Bay, one of the defining British naval victories of the conflict.

In March 1761, while commanding Vengeance, he captured the French privateer Entreprenant near Land's End.

He subsequently commanded HMS Flora.

Nightingale Island

Nightingale's legacy also survives geographically.

In 1760 he encountered the South Atlantic island subsequently known as Nightingale Island, within the Tristan da Cunha group.

Although earlier European knowledge of the island existed, it was subsequently named for Captain Gamaliel Nightingale.

The Nightingale Family

Gamaliel belonged to the Nightingale family associated with Kneesworth, Cambridgeshire.

He succeeded his elder brother to the baronetcy in 1782, although historical baronetage records state that he never assumed the title.

For this reason, the portrait is catalogued principally as Captain Gamaliel Nightingale, reflecting the rank and identity under which he is represented.

The Artist — John Simmons

John Simmons was born at Nailsea in 1715 and became associated particularly with Bristol and the West Country.

His surviving work establishes him as an accomplished Georgian portrait painter.

The present work is unsigned, but its Bonhams attribution is to John Simmons without qualification.

Documented Simmons portraits also demonstrate comparable conventional canvas formats and a consistent engagement with the formal language of Georgian British portraiture.

Dating the Portrait

Nightingale was promoted Captain on 18 October 1758.

The sitter's youthful appearance, naval rank and active service suggest a plausible working range around c.1758–1763.

The catalogue date circa 1760 is therefore historically coherent but remains an informed approximate dating rather than an exact documented year.

The portrait appeared at Bonhams, London, Old Master Paintings, Sale 30152, 6 February 2024, Lot 9.

Bonhams catalogued it as:

John Simmons (Nailsea 1715–1780 Bristol), Portrait of Captain Gamaliel Nightingale, half-length, in naval uniform.

Bonhams recorded:

Private Collection, Europe, since at least 1990.

A Bonhams label marked 9 / 30152 remains attached to the reverse.

Earlier Bonhams History

A separate surviving label records Sale 28759 and identifies John Simmons together with a portrait of a captain.

The earlier Bonhams catalogue image was publicly reproduced by September 2023 under the identification John Simmons, Captain Gamaliel Nightingale.

This establishes that the sitter identification and Simmons attribution predate the February 2024 Bonhams sale.

Historic Reverse Identification

An older handwritten paper label additionally appears to identify the work as a naval portrait of Nightingale.

Its precise date and authorship remain unestablished.

It is therefore retained as important historic identification evidence without being used to claim a more precise early provenance than the evidence presently permits.

Published and Digital Reference

The portrait has been reproduced digitally from the earlier Bonhams catalogue image as John Simmons, Captain Gamaliel Nightingale and is used in connection with the sitter's biographical record.

This forms part of the work's modern publication history.
