- Brief biography of the artist John Davison Liddell (1859 - 1942). John Davidson Liddell a known British artist who specialised in marine & also landscape paintings, he was born during the Victorian era in the year 1859 and was from the north east of England in the town North Shields which is in the borough of North-Tyne side in Tyne & Wear. He painted his artworks using mainly oils. He exhibited his paintings in his native North east area & loved to paint various ships along the river Tyne which was by his birthplace. He died during WW2 in 1942. A selection of his works can be found in the South Shields Museum & Art Gallery also Northumberland County Council Libraries also Quadrant, North Tyneside Council. His paintings have sold at various auctions around the world like Bonhams.

- In our opinion this is among his very finest works.
- Subject beautiful marine scene of a 2 masted sailing schooner ship with all sails hoisted entering the Tyne going past the Herd Groyne Lighthoue by South Shields on choppy seas. With the crew on deck by the stern. Overhead nearby seagulls flying above, to the right a steamer sail ship in the distance can be seen along with 2 yachts further back, towards the foreground a longboat with 2 crew rowing near the herd Groyne lighthouse. Above with mainly overcast cloudy sky with some areas of light blue coming through near the top, lower down seagulls can also be viewed flying above the waves with some wood wreckage floating.
- A rather nice display size with the frame being cm 46.5 high and 66 cm wide.
