Introduction

An impressive Victorian Scottish Highland landscape by William Beattie-Brown R.S.A. (1831–1909) depicting the dramatic mountain scenery of Sgùrr nan Gillean, Skye.

The composition looks towards one of the most recognisable peaks of the northern Cuillin, with the mountain rising beyond an extensively worked foreground of boulders, stones, rough vegetation and broken Highland terrain.

Above the mountains stretches an expansive and rapidly changing sky. Banks of grey and blue-grey cloud descend towards the peaks while intermittent passages of light illuminate parts of the distant landscape, creating the atmospheric drama for which Beattie-Brown's Highland subjects became particularly recognised.

Of particular documentary importance, the painting is signed W. Beattie-Brown A.R.S.A. Beattie-Brown was elected Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1871 and became a full Academician in 1884, providing a persuasive probable dating window of 1871–1884 for the present work.

The reverse additionally retains an Anthony Woodd Gallery Ltd., Edinburgh label identifying the painting as Sgùrr nan Gillean, Skye and recording gallery stock number B2881. This provenance was subsequently recorded when the painting appeared at Lyon & Turnbull in Edinburgh in February 2023.

Catalogue Note

Sgùrr nan Gillean, Skye brings together many of the qualities for which William Beattie-Brown established his reputation as a painter of the Scottish Highlands.

The composition progresses from the physical immediacy of the rocky foreground towards the increasingly atmospheric mountain range. Large boulders and scattered stones emerge from mossy, uneven Highland terrain, their weight and texture carefully observed.

Beyond them the landscape opens towards the Cuillin. Cooler slate and blue-grey tones distinguish the distant mountains from the warmer earth colours of the foreground.

The enormous sky forms an equally important component of the painting. Layers of cloud move across the mountains while areas of lighter colour suggest fleeting illumination breaking through the changing weather.

Rather than presenting Skye simply as picturesque scenery, Beattie-Brown conveys the physical experience of encountering the Cuillin within an immense and unpredictable Highland landscape.

Sgùrr nan Gillean and the Cuillin

Sgùrr nan Gillean is one of the principal and most recognisable peaks of the Cuillin on the Isle of Skye.

The historic identification of the present work is particularly well supported because the title Sgùrr nan Gillean, Skyesurvives on the Anthony Woodd Gallery label verso and was subsequently retained in its documented auction history.

The composition appears consistent with a viewpoint from or around Sligachan looking towards the northern Cuillin.

The surrounding mountain formations are consistent with the wider northern Cuillin and Basteir area. Individual subsidiary summits are deliberately not presented here as definitive identifications without further topographical documentation.

Dating the Painting

The lower-left signature reads:

W. Beattie-Brown A.R.S.A.

Beattie-Brown was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1871 and became a full Royal Scottish Academician in 1884.

The A.R.S.A. designation therefore provides significant evidence for dating the present work probably to 1871–1884.

The date range is presented as a scholarly assessment rather than an absolute date of execution, since professional postnominals within a signature cannot alone establish precisely when a canvas was painted.

The Artist

William Beattie-Brown was born near Haddington, East Lothian, in 1831 and became an established figure in Victorian Scottish landscape painting.

He studied at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh under Robert Scott Lauder and developed a career increasingly centred upon landscape.

From around 1860 onwards he became particularly associated with Highland scenery, the aspect of his work for which he achieved considerable recognition.

Beattie-Brown was elected A.R.S.A. in 1871 and R.S.A. in 1884 and maintained a long exhibition relationship with the Royal Scottish Academy. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy in London.

His Highland paintings are characterised by close observation of terrain combined with a particular sensitivity to weather, atmosphere and changing light.

His Diploma Work, Coire-na-Faireamh in Applecross Deer Forest, Ross-shire, dating from approximately 1883–1884, remains in the Royal Scottish Academy Diploma Collection.

Anthony Woodd established his Edinburgh gallery following a long career within the Scottish fine art trade, including his earlier association with the Malcolm Innes Gallery.

The gallery became particularly associated with traditional British and Scottish paintings, including nineteenth-century Scottish landscape painting.

The surviving B2881 stock number is potentially important for future provenance research. Should the corresponding gallery records survive, it may be possible to establish when the work entered stock and whether an earlier owner, collection or sale was recorded.

No earlier ownership is claimed without that documentary evidence.
