Collecting the Scottish Highlands: William Beattie-Brown’s Sgùrr nan Gillean, Skye
A collector’s look at a Victorian Highland landscape, its A.R.S.A. signature, Royal Scottish Academy context and documented Edinburgh provenance.
For collectors of nineteenth-century Scottish art, a landscape becomes particularly interesting when artistic quality is accompanied by documentary evidence that helps establish its date, subject and history.
Sgùrr nan Gillean, Skye by William Beattie-Brown R.S.A. (1831–1909) brings these elements together.
The painting depicts one of the defining mountain landscapes of the Isle of Skye and belongs to the Highland subject matter for which Beattie-Brown became particularly recognised.
A surviving W. Beattie-Brown A.R.S.A. signature provides an important clue to its probable date, while an historic Anthony Woodd Gallery Ltd., Edinburgh label preserves both its traditional title and gallery stock number B2881.

William Beattie-Brown and the Highland Landscape
Born near Haddington, East Lothian, in 1831, William Beattie-Brown trained at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh under Robert Scott Lauder.
Landscape became central to his career, and from around 1860 onwards he became particularly associated with Highland scenery.
The attraction of the Highlands to a landscape painter is readily apparent in the present work. Mountain geology, open terrain, rapidly changing weather and dramatic variations of light all become components of the composition.
In Sgùrr nan Gillean, Skye, substantial foreground boulders and scattered stones are observed with considerable attention before the landscape recedes towards the cooler and more atmospheric Cuillin.
The sky is equally important. Banks of grey and blue-grey cloud move across the mountain range, interrupted by passages of lighter atmosphere. Rather than presenting the mountains as an immutable backdrop, Beattie-Brown captures a landscape continually transformed by weather and light.
“The painting rewards close examination not only for its landscape, but for the documentary evidence preserved upon and behind the canvas.”
Dating the Work
The Significance of the A.R.S.A. Signature
For a collector, one of the most interesting features appears in the lower-left corner.
Signed Lower Left
The professional designation provides useful chronological evidence. Beattie-Brown was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1871 and became a full Royal Scottish Academician in 1884.
The use of A.R.S.A. therefore provides persuasive evidence for placing the painting probably within the period 1871–1884.
This does not provide an absolute execution date. Historic paintings should not be assigned more precision than the surviving evidence permits.
It does, however, provide a considerably stronger basis for dating the work than the broader description “late nineteenth century”.
The Landscape
Sgùrr nan Gillean and the Northern Cuillin
Sgùrr nan Gillean is one of the principal peaks of the Cuillin and one of the defining mountains of the Isle of Skye.
The present composition appears consistent with views towards the northern Cuillin from the landscape around Sligachan.
Beattie-Brown uses the rocky foreground to create a visual approach towards the mountain. Earthy browns, greens and ochres gradually transition towards cooler slate-grey and blue-grey tones, creating atmospheric recession and emphasising the scale of the landscape.
Importantly, the identification of the subject is not based solely upon modern visual interpretation.
The historic Anthony Woodd Gallery label on the reverse explicitly records Sgùrr nan Gillean, Skye, giving the traditional title considerably greater documentary weight.
Provenance
Anthony Woodd Gallery and Stock Number B2881
Verso labels can be among the most informative elements of a historic painting.
Anthony Woodd Gallery Ltd.
4 Dundas Street
Edinburgh EH3 6HZ
The label identifies William Beattie-Brown and records the title Sgùrr nan Gillean, Skye.
Stock No. B2881Anthony Woodd had a long career within the Scottish fine-art trade before establishing his gallery on Dundas Street, including an earlier association with the Malcolm Innes Gallery.
The stock number is particularly interesting from a provenance perspective.
If the corresponding gallery records survive, B2881 may potentially reveal when the painting entered stock, where it came from and whether an earlier owner or collection was recorded.
Until that evidence is obtained, however, no earlier ownership should be inferred.
For collectors, this distinction between documented provenance and possible future provenance is important.

Exhibition Context
Royal Scottish Academy and Exhibition History
Beattie-Brown maintained an exceptionally long relationship with the Royal Scottish Academy and also exhibited at the Royal Academy in London.
His Diploma Work, Coire-na-Faireamh in Applecross Deer Forest, Ross-shire, dating from approximately 1883–1884, provides an important documented comparison from close to the end of the probable period of the present painting.
However, no historical exhibition of Sgùrr nan Gillean, Skye itself has presently been securely identified.
That distinction is deliberately maintained.
An artist's known exhibition history should never automatically be transferred to an individual painting without documentary evidence.
