Introduction
Outbound from the Pearl River captures a traditional southern Chinese trading junk at the beginning of her voyage from Hong Kong towards the open waters of the South China Sea.
Painted in gouache on paper, the three-masted vessel advances beneath an impressive spread of segmented battened sails. The junk’s red-painted hull cuts through a lively blue-green sea as the low coastline recedes into the humid distance behind her.
Inscribed “A. Hean”, “Mouth of the Pearl River” and “Hong Kong”, the work belongs to the later China Trade marine tradition and is attributed stylistically to the Ah Hee Studio or a closely associated Hong Kong School workshop.

Catalogue Note
The composition presents a traditional three-masted junk travelling decisively from left to right. This directional arrangement strengthens the narrative of departure, while the open expanse of water ahead suggests the continuation of the vessel’s voyage beyond the sheltered Pearl River estuary.
The junk is described with considerable attention to its working construction. Its battened sails are fully set, with carefully graduated tones suggesting wind pressing against their segmented surfaces. The broad hull, high stern, projecting bow and stepped masts are characteristic of the southern Chinese coastal trading type.
Numerous small details bring the scene to life. Crew members appear at the bow, stern and across the working deck, attending to sheets and rigging. Their presence establishes the vessel as part of the commercial life of the delta rather than an imagined or generic maritime subject.
The red hull provides a rich chromatic focus against the cooler blues and greens of the sea. Short, opaque strokes describe breaking wave crests and areas of spray, creating a convincing impression of motion and fresh wind.
The coastline recedes softly towards the left, while the water and sky become increasingly luminous towards the vessel’s direction of travel. The result is an image of purposeful departure and maritime possibility, rendered with restraint rather than theatrical drama.
Maritime Life In the Pearl River Delta
The Pearl River Delta formed one of southern China’s most important networks of maritime commerce. Junks of differing sizes carried goods and passengers between Canton, Hong Kong, Macau and numerous smaller river and coastal settlements.
Even after steamships came to dominate international shipping routes, traditional sailing junks remained integral to regional trade. Their construction had evolved over centuries to meet the demands of river navigation, coastal passages and seasonal monsoon conditions.
This painting records that continuing working tradition in 1914. The junk is represented not as a romantic relic but as an active cargo vessel departing for another voyage.
Its combination of maritime precision and atmospheric presentation reflects the requirements of the international export market. Such pictures allowed merchants, officers, travellers and expatriate residents to preserve a visual record of southern Chinese ports and vessels.
The Artist And Attribution
The painting is attributed stylistically to the Ah Hee Studio or an associated Hong Kong School workshop.
Ah Hee is a name associated in the art market with late 19th- and early 20th-century Hong Kong harbour views and ship portraits. Paintings linked with this workshop tradition are distinguished by detailed vessels, carefully arranged marine settings and English-language inscriptions.
The inscription on the present work appears to read “A. Hean”. Although its placement resembles an artist’s signature, the identity behind the name has not been conclusively established.
No documentary evidence currently proves that A. Hean was Ah Hee or a recorded studio associate. The catalogue therefore preserves the visible inscription while presenting the Ah Hee Studio connection as a stylistic attribution rather than confirmed authorship.
Historic Frame And Documentation
The gouache is housed in a faux-bamboo giltwood frame with an ochre-gold bevelled mount. Its distinctive profile is visually sympathetic to the Chinese maritime subject and gives the painting an appealing period character.
A photograph retained on the reverse records writing from an earlier backing board. The graphite annotation includes framing instructions, a price, dimensions and the date 9 July 1914:
“2/6 each cut mounts
Oak and a slip
9 Jul 1914
14 + 11 in
To be sent before 6 o’clock.”
A further lightly written customer address is partially legible and appears to mention a Mrs [name indistinct] of “11 Glencoe Rd…”.
This documentation establishes that a framing order was recorded on 9 July 1914 and supports the painting’s dating. The annotation does not, however, conclusively identify the framer, original customer or geographical location in which the framing was completed.
The original presentation has been sensitively retained and supplemented with recently installed AR70 anti-reflective, UV-filtering glass. This glazing reduces reflections and helps protect the delicate gouache pigments from ultraviolet exposure.

Condition Report
The gouache is in good overall presentational condition for its age.
The painted surface appears stable beneath the glazing, with strong colour and well-preserved definition across the sails, hull, figures and sea. Some scattered foxing is visible on close inspection, consistent with the age and nature of the paper support.
The gold-toned mount has developed gentle age-related toning. The faux-bamboo giltwood frame remains structurally sound and displays a pleasing historic patina with minor surface wear and rubbing.
The painting has recently been fitted with AR70 anti-reflective, UV-filtering glass, providing improved visibility and additional protection.
The work has not been removed from its frame for examination. Please inspect the supplied photographs carefully, as they form part of the condition description.
