Introduction
An evocative original enamel street sign created for Ebury Street in Belgravia, one of the most prestigious and historically significant neighbourhoods within the City of Westminster.
Dating from the mid-twentieth century and believed to have been produced during the 1940s, the sign bears the boldly abbreviated street name “EBURY ST.” together with the postal district “S.W.1.” The civic authority is identified across the upper register in decorative red Gothic-style lettering.
Its palette of black, white and deep red gives the object exceptional graphic presence. The weathered enamel surface, chipped edges and areas of exposed metal provide convincing evidence of its former functional life within London’s streetscape.

Catalogue Note
The sign was designed for maximum clarity when viewed within a busy urban environment.
Large black sans-serif capitals identify Ebury Street across the centre, while the smaller red “S.W.1.” records its historic central London postal district. Above, the elaborate red lettering used for “City of Westminster” introduces a handsome civic flourish.
A black enamel border encloses the composition, with rounded corners to the white inner field softening the otherwise strongly geometric design.
The vitreous enamel technique created a smooth and durable finish capable of surviving years of outdoor exposure. Weathering has resulted in chips, scratches, discolouration and corrosion, particularly where the enamel has been lost from the edges and corners.
Rather than diminishing its character, these signs of use provide an authentic surface history and distinguish the sign from modern decorative copies.

The area was principally developed during the nineteenth century as London expanded westwards. Much of Ebury Street was built between approximately 1815 and 1860, and its surviving terraces contribute to the distinctive architectural character of Belgravia and neighbouring Pimlico.
Its S.W.1. postal designation places it within the historic heart of central London, close to Victoria, Buckingham Palace and the border with Chelsea.
Ebury Street’s architectural setting and prestigious central location give the present sign additional historical and collecting interest. It is both a functional piece of former street furniture and a physical record of London’s changing urban identity.
Historical Context
Vitreous enamel signage became widely used for municipal and commercial purposes because of its clarity, durability and resistance to weather.
The production process involved applying powdered glass to a metal surface before firing it at high temperature. This fused the enamel to the underlying metal and produced the familiar glossy finish associated with historic street signs.
Municipal authorities adopted distinctive typography, colour combinations and layouts that allowed their signs to be recognised immediately. The red Gothic-style lettering used here provides a particularly memorable expression of Westminster’s civic identity.
As London’s street furniture was replaced and modernised, many earlier enamel signs were removed. Surviving examples are now collected as architectural objects in their own right, valued for their typography, local associations and naturally weathered surfaces.

Condition Report
The sign is presented in substantially weathered vintage condition consistent with historic outdoor use.
There are numerous scratches, scuffs, stains, surface marks and areas of discolouration throughout. Enamel losses are visible around the edges, corners and mounting holes, exposing the underlying metal in several places.
Oxidation and corrosion are present within areas of exposed metal. The upper-left corner has a particularly noticeable area of loss and corrosion, with further chipping and wear distributed around the black border.
The metal panel displays some age-related warping. Despite this, the principal inscription remains bold, clear and readily legible, and the sign possesses excellent decorative character.
Original fixing holes are present, but screws and mounting equipment are not supplied. A suitable and secure hanging method should be selected for the intended wall and location.
Although the sign was originally made for outdoor use, indoor or sheltered display is now recommended to preserve the historic enamel and limit further corrosion.
