Introduction
An atmospheric signed Victorian landscape by Stephen Enoch Hogley (1842-1927) depicting Borrowdale, Cumberland, within the English Lake District.
Dating to circa 1880, the painting presents a peaceful pastoral scene illuminated by warm afternoon light. A farmer and his cattle follow a winding path through the foreground while wooded slopes, water and distant mountains extend through the composition.
The palette is particularly attractive, combining warm golden ochres and sunlit greens with deeper olive and forest greens, earthy browns and russet tones. These warmer colours contrast with cooler blue-grey and muted violet tones across the distant fells, while soft cream and pale blue passages within the cloud-streaked sky introduce additional light and contrast.
The transition from richer, warmer colours in the foreground to softer, cooler tones in the distance contributes significantly to the painting's atmospheric depth.
Hogley's brushwork is similarly responsive to the landscape. More descriptive touches define the foreground vegetation, cattle and figure before the handling becomes broader and freer through the middle distance and increasingly soft across the distant mountains and sky.

Catalogue Note
The farmer and cattle within the foreground provide scale, movement and a quiet narrative element within the expansive landscape.
A winding path leads through the foreground towards the valley, where pasture, woodland and water establish successive layers of depth before rising towards the distant fells.
Hogley's handling changes noticeably according to distance.
The foreground is more deliberately articulated, with shorter and more descriptive brushstrokes defining vegetation, the winding path, cattle and figure. Through the middle distance the brushwork becomes broader and freer, allowing areas of pasture and woodland to merge naturally into the wider landscape.
The distant fells are treated more softly, with broader and increasingly blended passages of blue-grey, green and muted violet. The loosely worked cloud formations above complement this softer treatment and reinforce the sense of atmospheric recession.
Warm golden sunlight selectively illuminates parts of the landscape, creating a contrast between sunlit pasture and areas of deeper woodland and mountain shadow.
Of particular topographical interest is the substantial fell rising within the mountainous backdrop. Its appearance and relationship to the surrounding Borrowdale landscape suggest that it may represent Glaramara or part of the Glaramara massif.
This identification remains provisional rather than definitive. Victorian landscape painters could adjust viewpoints, proportions and topographical relationships for compositional effect, and the precise viewpoint represented by Hogley has not been conclusively established.
The wider identification as Borrowdale is supported by the surviving verso label recording "Borrowdale, Cumberland".
Borrowdale
Borrowdale is one of the Lake District's most celebrated landscapes, extending southwards from Derwentwater towards the mountainous heart of Cumbria.
The valley's combination of pasture, woodland, water and dramatic fells made it a natural subject for nineteenth-century British landscape painters.
The possible identification of the prominent mountain as Glaramara or part of the Glaramara massif adds an interesting topographical dimension to the painting, although the individual fell identification remains provisional.
Hogley's composition captures Borrowdale in a particularly peaceful and romantic manner, balancing the intimate rural presence of the farmer and cattle with the much greater scale of the surrounding mountain scenery.
The Artist
Stephen Enoch Hogley (1842-1927) was a British landscape painter closely associated with Yorkshire.
Born at Almondbury near Huddersfield in 1842, Hogley was apprenticed to Peace Sykes and studied drawing at the Holmfirth Mechanics' Institution.
He subsequently pursued a career principally devoted to landscape painting in oils and watercolours.
Hogley's work frequently incorporates hills, lakes, cattle and rural figures, with particular attention given to atmospheric conditions and warm natural light.
He was associated with the Yorkshire Union of Artists and became a council member in 1895. His recorded exhibition history includes works shown at Manchester City Art Gallery and the Royal Society of British Artists.
The present painting is characteristic of this approach, combining pastoral subject matter, mountainous scenery, varied brushwork and carefully observed effects of natural light.

The reverse of the canvas bears a G. Rowney & Co., London stamp.
G. Rowney & Co. was an established London manufacturer and supplier of artists' materials.
The mark is therefore recorded as an artists' materials supplier or canvas-related manufacturer's mark associated with the support, rather than as an ownership or provenance mark.
The surviving stamp forms part of the physical and material history of the painting.
