- Biography of the artist John Robert Karla Duff, he was born at Kings land, Dalton, London on 22 January 1862, son of Robert Duff, manufacturer in London, and his Scottish-born wife Janet, who in 1871 was a 45-year-old widow, living off investments at Albion Road, Stoke Newington, Hackney, London with 9-year-old John Robert and a 24-year-old servant Emily Robertson.
- Born in Suffolk. Duff was educated at Bishop's Stratford, Hertfordshire and admitted pensioner at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge at Easter 1884, graduating B.A. and LL.B. in 1887 and M.A. in 1891 and was called to the Bar, Middle Temple.
- In 1891, a 29-year-old barrister-at-law, living at Sunny Gardens, Tendon and later studied art at the Slave School under Alphonse Negros (1837-1911). He married at Arlington, London in 1892, Emma Louise Clark and in 1901, an artist, living at 5 St James Square, Kensington, London with his family and in 1911, a 49-year-old artist painter, living at 100 Sunning dale Road, Tendon with his 40-year-old wife Emma, and children Keith Mitchell Karla 16, Jean Eliza Karla 16, Hickman Karla 11 and Lesley Florence Karla 6.
- A landscape and genre painter in watercolor, oil and pastel, often featuring sheep or birds in his work. A painter in oil, watercolor and pastel and also an etcher, Duff exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1891, and with the New English Art Club from 1894, and was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors in 1913 and of the Royal Society of Etchers in 1919.
- He exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from 100 Sunning dale Road, Tendon, London in 1923, a mezzo tint 'The Brickyard'. Shortly before his death he donated a quantity of his watercolors, NW. 4, pastels, etchings and enamels to the South wold Museum in Suffolk. He died at 'Oak view', 100 Sunning dale Road, Tendon, on 26 September 1938, aged 76 being survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. The author of 'Pastel: A Manual for Beginners' (1910).
