Catalogue Note

The composition is dominated by the distinctive volcanic landscape of Mount Vesuvius, its dark summit releasing a substantial plume of smoke and ash into an expansive pale-blue sky.

Warm pink and reddish tones illuminate the upper slopes, suggesting the fiery activity taking place within the volcano.

The neighbouring mountainous ridge is consistent with the Monte Somma landscape, providing an important topographical feature supporting the identification of Vesuvius.

Across the foreground, traditional sailing vessels with pale sails and carefully delineated rigging move through the blue waters. A smaller boat accompanies the principal vessel, while a distant coastal settlement extends beneath the mountain.

The artist has balanced the imposing volcanic landscape with the quiet activity of maritime life, producing a composition of both historical and decorative interest.

The Artist — Neapolitan School

The painter responsible for the present work has not been identified with certainty.

During the 19th century, Naples supported a flourishing tradition of gouache painting, particularly views of the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, coastal settlements and historic landmarks.

Such paintings appealed to European travellers and collectors, many of whom acquired colourful views of the region during the Grand Tour.

The present gouache belongs to this artistic tradition and displays stylistic similarities with the volcanic landscapes associated with Camillo de Vito.

Camillo de Vito and the Neapolitan Gouache Tradition

Camillo de Vito was a Neapolitan painter known for gouache representations of volcanic eruptions.

His documented works include depictions of Mount Vesuvius accompanied by descriptive inscriptions recording particular eruption dates.

The present painting shares characteristics with this tradition, including the dramatic volcanic plume, illuminated mountain slopes, maritime foreground and dated Italian inscription.

Nevertheless, these features were not exclusive to De Vito. No signature or exact compositional match has been established that would justify attributing the painting directly to his hand.

The description in the manner of Camillo de Vito is therefore retained as a qualified stylistic comparison.

Historical Context — Mount Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius was among the most celebrated natural landmarks visited by travellers to Naples during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Its periodic eruptions attracted scientific attention and inspired numerous artistic representations.

The contrast between the destructive energy of the volcano and the peaceful maritime landscape below became a recurring subject in Neapolitan painting.

Vesuvius experienced documented volcanic activity during the 1840s, making the inscription on the present work historically relevant.

The Inscription — Eruzione del 1844

The lower border carries the Italian inscription Eruzione del 1844, translating as “Eruption of 1844”.

This identifies the volcanic event represented but does not conclusively establish the painting's year of execution.

Dated inscriptions were a recognised feature of Neapolitan volcanic gouaches, and comparable examples appear in documented works by Camillo de Vito and other artists.

Comparable Works

Signed eruption gouaches by Camillo de Vito have been documented by Christie's and Dorotheum, including compositions identifying volcanic events through inscriptions.

The Museo Nazionale di San Martino in Naples also holds a work associated with De Vito depicting an eruption of Vesuvius in 1820.

Gioacchino La Pira and Carlo Bossoli produced related Neapolitan volcanic subjects, providing further context for the artistic tradition.

These comparisons support the historical and stylistic classification of the present work but do not establish authorship.

Dating

The painting is catalogued as 19th century.

Although the inscription identifies the year 1844. Its materials, subject and stylistic characteristics are consistent with the Neapolitan gouache tradition of the period.

Historical Auction Attribution

Halls Fine Art originally catalogued the painting as Mount Etna Erupting.

Subsequent comparison of the volcanic profile, neighbouring ridge and coastal setting supports the identification of Mount Vesuvius.

The original Halls description is retained within the provenance record to preserve the painting's documented auction history.
