Introduction

A beautifully observed original oil painting by British wildlife artist Pip McGarry (b.1955), presenting an intimate portrait of a young cheetah cub.

Entitled “Cheetah Cub – Innocence of the Wild” and dating to circa 2020, the work captures the animal at a compelling point between juvenile vulnerability and emerging predatory instinct.

Catalogue Note

The composition is dominated by the cub’s face, creating an unusually intimate encounter between subject and viewer.

McGarry renders the animal through carefully controlled layers of warm ochres, earthy browns, soft golds, creamy whites and rich blacks. The cheetah’s distinctive spotted coat and dark facial markings are precisely observed, while subtle tonal transitions lend convincing softness and volume to the fur.

Particular attention has been given to the eyes. Their direct gaze establishes the emotional centre of the painting, conveying curiosity and youthful vulnerability while simultaneously hinting at the instinctive alertness of the adult predator.

Fine brushwork describes individual hairs and whiskers around the face and muzzle. This highly resolved treatment contrasts with the broader, softer handling of the background.

Muted greens and gently shifting natural tones suggest vegetation or savanna grasses without competing with the principal subject. The resulting soft-focus effect creates atmospheric depth while directing attention firmly towards the cub.

Pip McGarry (b.1955) is a British wildlife artist particularly recognised for his paintings of African wildlife and big cats.

McGarry was closely associated with the Marwell International Wildlife Art Society and has exhibited wildlife paintings at recognised British art venues and specialist exhibitions.

His profile extended beyond the gallery environment through television appearances relating to wildlife painting, including ITV’s “A Brush with the Wild”.
