🐦 Subject & Medium

An original mid-20th century watercolour on paper by the celebrated Scottish wildlife artist Ralston Gudgeon RSW (1910–1984), depicting a beautifully observed Redwing captured in flight as it prepares to settle on a branch. Executed with great sensitivity and control, the work beautifully conveys the elegance, movement and alert natural character of this much-loved migratory thrush.

The painting is presented beneath protective glass in its original gilt wooden frame, giving it an appealing period presentation and making it ready for immediate display.

🎨 Composition & Technique

This accomplished ornithological study demonstrates Gudgeon’s remarkable ability to unite careful natural observation with refined artistic expression. The Redwing is portrayed with exceptional accuracy, from its distinctive cream eyebrow stripe to the warm orange-red flanks and subtle tonal variations in the plumage.

The artist’s handling of watercolour is particularly effective. Delicate washes build the form of the bird with softness and clarity, while more confident brushwork defines the wings, body and movement in flight. The composition captures a fleeting moment in nature with impressive poise, creating the impression that the bird has just paused mid-air before landing.

The restrained background keeps the focus entirely on the bird, allowing the delicacy of the subject to stand out beautifully. This balance of scientific accuracy and artistic sensitivity is one of the reasons Gudgeon’s work remains so admired among collectors of wildlife art and bird studies.

📜 Historical Context

Painted during the mid-20th century, this work reflects a period when British wildlife art was increasingly appreciated for both its decorative quality and its natural history interest. Artists working in this field often combined close field observation with traditional fine art technique, producing works that appealed to collectors, birdwatchers and museums alike.

The Redwing (Turdus iliacus) is Britain’s smallest true thrush and is best known as a winter visitor from Scandinavia and Iceland. Its seasonal arrival each year, together with its distinctive markings and graceful flight, has long made it a favourite subject for ornithologists, wildlife artists and collectors of bird paintings.

Works such as this also speak to the wider fascination with British birdlife during the post-war period, when natural history, conservation awareness and the study of native and migratory species became increasingly popular. As a result, original wildlife watercolours of this quality remain highly desirable today.
