Introduction

This charming small owl represents the more sculptural and expressive side of British studio pottery during the 1970s.

Rather than pursuing naturalistic representation, the maker has created a strongly simplified, almost architectural form. The compact body, substantial wings and broad frontal composition give the sculpture a weighty visual presence despite its diminutive scale.

Particularly effective are the enormous circular eyes, which dominate the face and introduce a playful Surrealist quality. One eye is open while the other is partially closed, creating the impression of an animated character caught in a moment of observation.

The extensive incised detailing across the wings contrasts with the comparatively smooth breast, while the rich mottled glaze emphasises the tactile and handmade character of the pottery.

The owl has been modelled in a deliberately compact and simplified manner, characteristic of the transition in British studio pottery towards more sculptural ceramic objects during the mid and later 20th century.

The strong silhouette and compressed geometry give the work a Brutalist-inspired quality, while the irregular glaze provides contrast through areas of warm ochre, cream, caramel and dark brown.

The feather patterning is rendered through bold linear incisions, particularly across the wings and shoulders, creating a pronounced relief-like texture.
