Introduction

Evening, Glen Sannox is an evocative signed early 20th-century Scottish landscape, circa 1900–1920, by George Houston RSA RSW (1869–1947) depicting one of the Isle of Arran’s most dramatic mountain environments at the close of day.

Dark silhouettes of the mountains rise beyond open moorland while a warm evening sky illuminates the horizon.

A winding track leads into the glen towards a group of trees from which a delicate plume of smoke rises — a small indication of human habitation set against the scale and solitude of the surrounding landscape.

The painting retains a particularly important Ian MacNicol Fine Art Dealer label verso recording both the title Evening Glen Sannox and the artist as George Houston R.S.A.

Catalogue Note

Houston reduces the Arran landscape to a sequence of powerful tonal masses.

The mountains appear monumental against the luminous sky, while the comparatively low horizon gives considerable visual importance to the changing evening light.

Across the foreground, passages of russet, brown and green describe heather and rough moorland.

The track provides a natural perspective line through the composition, leading towards the dark stand of trees.

Against these trees, a plume of pale smoke provides one of the painting’s most distinctive details. Its presence introduces human scale without disturbing the prevailing sense of solitude.

The combination of mountain structure, subdued earth colours and warm evening light produces a landscape of considerable atmosphere.

George Houston and the Scottish Landscape

George Houston was born in Dalry, Ayrshire, in 1869 and developed a distinguished career principally devoted to Scottish landscape painting.

Ayrshire, Argyll and western Scotland provided recurring subjects, and his paintings frequently explore changing seasons, weather conditions and atmospheric effects.

Houston worked in both oils and watercolours and became associated with important Scottish exhibiting institutions, including the Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour.

His work is represented in Scottish public collections.

Houston was also associated with writer Neil Munro, illustrating Ayrshire Idylls in 1912.

Dating

The painting itself is not dated.

Its stylistic characteristics, materials and relationship to Houston’s mature landscape practice support an early 20th-century dating, circa 1900–1920.

The date should therefore be understood as a considered scholarly assessment rather than an inscribed date.

Historic Ian MacNicol Label

The reverse retains an Ian MacNicol Fine Art Dealer label from 48 West George Street, Glasgow.

It records:

“Evening Glen Sannox”

and

“George Houston R.S.A.”

This surviving label forms an important part of the painting’s provenance because it establishes an earlier dealer association while simultaneously preserving the historic title and attribution.
