Defying naval tradition, Nelson split his fleet into two perpendicular attack columns, smashing directly into the enemy line and forcing ship-to-ship combat. Despite being fatally shot by a French marksman during the battle, Nelson lived long enough to witness his stunning victory: the British captured or destroyed 20 allied ships without losing a single one.

This triumph secured Britain’s naval dominance for over a century and cemented Nelson’s legacy as a national hero.
