Fong's works have sold at auctions around the world, with sold prices fetching up to 8,750 US, which was for The Arachnase under full sail at Christie’s. Lai Fong was active and flourished in the late 19th to early 20th century. In 1870-1910, he moved from his native homeland, Hong Kong, to Kolkata, formally Calcutta, India. Well known for being a prime pier head artist. He loved to show his works on outbound ocean voyages. A true master for his exceptional attention to detail, especially in sailing ship clippers and basques. - The jute clipper Slieve Roe at sea oil on canvas 59 x 99mTc The three-masted iron full-rigger Sieve Roe official number 78862 registered in Liverpool was ordered for the famous Sinclair fleet of so-called ‘colonial clippers’ owned by James Sinclair of Tyrone, Ulster. Built by Harland & Wolff yards number 115 and 110 at Belfast in 1878, she was registered at 1,749 tons gross (1,668 net) and measured 257 feet in length with a 38½ foot beam. The last of three identical sisters, Sieve Roe proved the fastest of the trio, although it was said at the time that the ‘Sieves’ were the finest sailing ships ever to be launched from Harland & Wolff’s yards. On a passage out to Calcutta in 1883, Sieve Roe raced 1,500 miles in five days and averaged 16 knots for one stretch of 23½ hours. Sold to Simpson Bros. towards the end of the century, her successful career continued when she set a 28-day record between Melbourne and Callao (Chile) under their colors and remained in service with them until broken up in 1910.
