🏛️ Antique 1855 Historic Watercolour — “Mary Queen of Scots: The Last Farewell” by Christoffel Bisschop | Framed Masterpiece of Royal History

🎨 Subject & Medium

Presenting a stunning mid-19th-century watercolour titled “Mary Queen of Scots: The Last Farewell”, created by renowned Dutch artist Christoffel Bisschop and dated 1855. This emotionally powerful, historically significant work is signed by the artist and beautifully preserved under protective glass in its original ornate gilt frame — a true statement piece ready to elevate any art collection.

🖌️ Composition & Technique

Bisschop’s masterful watercolour technique infuses this historic moment with delicate detail and profound emotional weight. His soft, transparent washes gently illuminate Mary’s white blouse and mourning veil, while textured brushwork brings out the rich browns of her fur shawl and the deep blues of her skirt. The contrast between smooth fabric, weathered stone, and shimmering leaded glass adds tactile dimension you can almost feel.

The colour palette is subtle yet dramatic: muted whites, earthy browns, deep navy tones, and soft golden light streaming through the window. These tones perfectly set the somber, reflective atmosphere, pulling the viewer into the dignified sorrow of the scene.

The composition centers on Mary, poised gracefully at the foot of an oak staircase, her head bowed in resignation. Nearby, a grieving man and woman lean solemnly over the window sill, faces marked by quiet sadness as they share her final farewell. The interplay of shadowed interior and bright exterior light creates a powerful visual metaphor between life, fate, and loss. Bisschop’s work transforms this historical moment into a timeless, emotionally immersive masterpiece.

👩🎨 About the Artist

Christoffel Bisschop (1828–1904) was a celebrated Dutch painter and lithographer, best known for his evocative genre scenes. Trained under prominent European masters, he exhibited widely in the Netherlands, France, England, and the U.S., including the prestigious Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. Today, his works are preserved in major museum collections, including the Fries Museum, which houses a full recreation of his and his wife Kate Bisschop-Swift’s workshop. His top auction price has reached $30,197 USD at Christie’s Amsterdam.

👑 Historical Significance

Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots (1542–1587) was one of Europe’s most tragic royal figures. Crowned as an infant and later Queen Consort of France, her reign was marred by political intrigue, religious conflict, personal heartbreak, and ultimately imprisonment by her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England. After 18 years in captivity, Mary was executed for treason — a dramatic downfall that cemented her legacy as a romantic, tragic icon in European history.
