Introduction
First light moves across the slopes above Loch Tay in this evocative Victorian landscape by Tom Seymour. Ben Lawers rises beyond the water, its great mountain form partially concealed by bands of pale morning mist.
In the foreground, three long-horned Highland cattle graze among heather, ferns and rough grass. Their substantial bodies and richly coloured coats provide an earthy counterpoint to the dissolving mountain atmosphere beyond.
A tumbling burn enters the composition at the left, while a modest stone cottage rests against the hillside on the right. These carefully placed details transform the painting from a purely topographical view into a broader meditation upon pastoral life within the Scottish Highlands.

Catalogue Note
The composition is organised through successive layers that lead from detailed foreground vegetation towards the increasingly softened forms of the distant mountain.
At the lower left, a lively burn flows over stones and through ferns. Its diagonal course acts as a visual pathway into the painting, drawing attention towards the Highland cattle occupying the central pasture.
Seymour gives each animal an individual presence. Their sweeping horns and shaggy coats are articulated with controlled touches of ochre, russet, cream and deep brown. Shorter, more textural brushstrokes convey the roughness of their hair, contrasting with the smoother handling of the distant water and sky.
Behind the cattle, moss-covered slopes lead towards a small rural cottage. Almost absorbed into the surrounding land, the building introduces human scale without interrupting the landscape’s prevailing tranquillity.
The distant Ben Lawers massif is treated very differently. Its contours are gradually dissolved through translucent greys, blue-green tones and silvery light. This atmospheric recession produces the impression of mist lifting as the first daylight reaches the mountain.
The warm and cool sections of the palette are carefully balanced. Earth colours anchor the foreground, while cool light opens the landscape beyond, giving the relatively compact canvas a convincing sense of distance.
The Artist
Tom Seymour was a British painter active during the later 19th century and is principally associated with landscape, coastal and pastoral subjects.
His known works frequently depict the dramatic scenery of Scotland and northern Britain. Lochs, waterfalls, mountain ranges and changing weather recur throughout the paintings offered under his name, often accompanied by cattle, sheep, boats or isolated rural buildings.

The surviving biographical record is limited, and Seymour is not readily documented within the principal institutional exhibition indexes. It has therefore been suggested that Tom Seymour may have been a professional working name, although this has not been conclusively established.
The signed paintings associated with him nevertheless form a recognisable body of work distinguished by Highland scenery, subdued tonal harmonies and a strong sense of changing weather.

Condition Report
The oil painting is offered in good overall condition for its Victorian age.
Stable age-related craquelure is present across the painted surface. There are minor areas of paint loss towards the extreme lower edges, together with foxing or staining in places.
The painting was professionally revarnished in 2010, according to its supplied conservation history. This treatment preserved the tonal depth and presentation of the surface.
The later traditional gilt frame displays scuffs, rubbing and general age-related wear but remains structurally sound and ready for display.
