Introduction
An exceptional original Victorian oil on board by the celebrated British marine painter Sarah Louisa Kilpack, depicting the dramatic La Corbière Lighthouse rising above Jersey’s rugged granite coastline.
Painted circa 1880, only a few years after the lighthouse entered service, this atmospheric composition captures the power and movement of the Atlantic Ocean as foaming waves crash against the rocks beneath a storm-filled sky. Kilpack’s refined handling of light, colour and atmosphere creates remarkable depth and drama, while her rich palette of golden ochres, smoky greys, soft mauves, muted sea greens and cool blues lends the painting a particularly evocative quality.
The foreground includes shipwreck debris scattered amongst the surf and rocks, adding both narrative interest and historical resonance. These broken timbers recall the many vessels lost on the hazardous reefs around La Corbière before the lighthouse was completed in 1874. Rather than illustrating a specific wreck, Kilpack uses these elements to heighten the maritime drama of the scene and to underscore the dangers of the coastline.

Executed with confident and expressive brushwork, Kilpack masterfully conveys the movement of the sea, the force of the wind and the gathering tension of an approaching storm. Her treatment of light allows the rocky headland to glow against the darker sky, while brilliant highlights across the surf provide a vivid contrast to the brooding clouds and deeper waters.
Delicate passages of sea mist soften the granite outcrops, and the carefully placed wreckage gives the composition both structure and narrative interest. The result is a strikingly balanced marine painting that unites drama, atmosphere and historical observation with considerable assurance.
Completed in 1874, La Corbière Lighthouse was built to protect one of Jersey’s most dangerous stretches of coastline. The reefs extending from the headland were notorious amongst mariners throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the lighthouse soon became a vital beacon of safety. Painted only a few years after it entered service, this work reflects both the rugged beauty of Jersey and the island’s maritime heritage.
The Artist
Sarah Louisa Kilpack (1839–1909) was one of Britain’s most accomplished Victorian female marine painters. Born in Bexley Heath, Kent, she became known for her atmospheric depictions of the coastlines of Cornwall, Devon and the Channel Islands.
Working during the late Victorian period, Kilpack developed a distinctive style characterised by luminous skies, dramatic weather and a sensitive understanding of the sea. Her paintings are represented in both public and private collections and remain highly sought after by collectors of Victorian marine painting, British coastal art and important nineteenth-century women artists.

Condition Report
Presented in good overall condition.
There are areas of minor historic paint retouching within the lower section of the composition, principally to the foreground sea, a small area of sea wash immediately above the rocks and along the far edge. These restorations are unobtrusive and do not detract from the overall presentation.
There is age-related craquelure and scattered foxing. The later decorative gilt moulded frame displays wear commensurate with age and handling.
