๐ Signed British Hunting Oil Painting โ Worcestershire Hunt with Bay Horse โPugโ by Leesa Sandys-Lumsdaine
๐ Subject & Medium
This striking oil on canvas, titled โPug โ Bay Horse With Huntsman Wearing Black Top Hat Up On Huntโ, beautifully captures a classic Worcestershire hunting scene, painted circa 1972 by the renowned British artist Leesa Sandys-Lumsdaine. A masterful equestrian portrait, this work delivers both commanding visual presence and refined detail, executed in rich oil on its original canvas.
๐จ Composition & Technique
The composition immerses you in the heart of the hunt: a proud huntsman, confidently riding his prized bay horse Pug, is shown in full side profile, trotting across sweeping open fields.
The artistโs colour palette celebrates the vibrancy of the English countryside:
-
Warm chestnut browns in the horseโs sleek coat
-
Crisp black and white contrasts in the riderโs formal attire
-
Lush greens and earthy yellows across the rolling grasslands
-
A dynamic sky filled with pale greys and bright blue gaps, where scattered clouds add depth and atmosphere
Sandys-Lumsdaineโs brushwork balances precision and expression:
-
Fine, delicate strokes bring out the tailored folds of the jacket, the taut reins, and the strong musculature of the horse
-
Looser, more fluid strokes animate the landscape and sky, giving the scene a sense of movement and life
Her style, deeply rooted in British sporting art traditions, blends lifelike accuracy with painterly charm, perfectly capturing the excitement, elegance, and timeless spirit of countryside hunts.
