Dating to approximately 1885 and attributed to the circle of Edwin Frederick Holt, the painting brings together two subjects central to British sporting culture: the carefully bred hunter and the spirited working terrier. Their quiet companionship gives the scene an intimate quality that extends beyond conventional animal portraiture.

Catalogue Note
The hunter is presented almost in profile against the muted architecture of the stable. Its pale and subtly varied coat emerges from the surrounding shadows, directing attention towards the animal’s muscular form and composed bearing.
The distinctive colouring has been built through layered passages of grey, cream, russet and subdued rose. Selected impasto highlights enliven the shoulder, flank and mane, producing a gentle sheen as though the horse were illuminated by daylight entering through an unseen stable doorway.
The horse’s stance is natural and balanced. Its anatomy is described with confidence without becoming rigid or excessively formal, preserving the sense of a living animal observed during a quiet interval.
The terrier sits faithfully at the horse’s feet. Painted with economical but expressive brushwork, it provides a note of alertness and affection while reinforcing the Victorian sporting context.
The stable is described through a harmonious palette of ochre, burnt umber, softened brown and muted straw. Timber boarding and architectural details recede into atmospheric shadow, allowing the horse’s colouring to remain the visual focus.
Carefully controlled tonal transitions establish the volume of the body, while firmer strokes define the mane, legs and facial features. Softer handling throughout the surrounding interior creates depth without distracting from the animals.
The contrast between the horse’s broad, luminous form and the smaller, animated terrier gives the composition both dignity and narrative warmth.
The Artist
Edwin Frederick Holt (1830–1912) was a British painter whose career encompassed historical, genre, landscape and animal subjects. He exhibited in London at the Royal Academy, British Institution and Royal Society of British Artists.
During the later part of his career, Holt became particularly associated with representations of horses, dogs, livestock and rural life. His animal paintings are admired for their direct observation, approachable character and sympathetic treatment of the relationship between animals and their surroundings.
The present painting shares qualities found in Holt’s animal subjects and in works produced within the broader late-Victorian sporting tradition: a restrained stable setting, warm earth colours, carefully modelled equine anatomy and the combination of a horse with a companion dog.
Because the painting is unsigned, it is catalogued as “Circle of Edwin Frederick Holt” rather than as a work executed by Holt himself.
The reverse bears the stamp of Brodie & Middleton, 79 Long Acre, London. The company was a prominent firm of artists’ colourmen, brush manufacturers and canvas preparers whose materials were used by numerous professional painters.
The stamp provides useful physical evidence concerning the commercial source of the prepared canvas and is compatible with the proposed late-19th-century date. However, the firm traded from 79 Long Acre over a long period, and the stamp cannot establish the precise year of execution or identify the painter.

Condition Report
The painting is in good structural and visual condition and has been professionally conserved to an excellent display standard.
The 2025 treatment comprised consolidation using Lascaux adhesive, surface cleaning with a 5% tri-ammonium citrate solution and removal of the previous varnish with acetone and Stoddard solvent.
Areas of loss were filled using Mowiol G4-88 and whiting. Retouching, including minor areas of overpainting, was undertaken using pigments in Paraloid B72. A final MS2A varnish was applied, the canvas was retensioned and the stretcher keys were secured.
The painted surface is currently stable. Historic wear and professionally treated losses remain consistent with the painting’s age and conservation history.
The artwork is housed in an ornate Victorian gilt frame with scrolling acanthus decoration and classically inspired moulding. Its warm gilded finish complements the ochres, russets and muted grey tones of the composition.
The frame displays historic rubbing, craquelure, surface scuffs, small decorative losses and areas of earlier overpainting. These signs of age contribute to its established period character. It remains structurally sound and ready to hang.
