- Subject seascape marine portrait of the famous known Scottish sailing ship Ross Shire, which is in full sail, sailing through the Clyde estuary out on the high seas, in side profile facing right, in choppy waters. With a mix of blue and gray skies overhead. You can see some figures on deck towards the stern.
- Title inscribed verso Braque "Ross Shire".
- Oil on canvas.
- Circa late 20th century to 76 to 1976.
- Signed by the well-known British marine artist J C Bernie.
- J C Bernie is a British Postwar & Contemporary artist. J C Bernie's work has been offered at auction many times. The highest price was $6250 US Dollars for R.M.S Queen Elizabeth 2 “Launch Day anchored off Greenockite on the river Clyde sold at Christie’s on 25th June 2008.
- The Ross Shire was a four-masted steel baroque built in 1891 by Scott & Co., Greenock. Its official number was 98653 Flag GR. Launched on 6th June 1891 by Thomas Law & Co for Glasgow Shire Line. First port of register is Glasgow. The builder, Scott & Co Greenock, yard Cartsdyke East, yard number 285. Size of ship in meters 88,10x12,54 x 41 meters or in feet 289.1x 41.2 x24.4 and tonnage 2257 GET and 2148 NRT.
- Rigged with royal sails over a double top and top gallant sails. Captain A. Baxter in 1891 and in January 1900 Captain W. Couper. End year 1900, fate caught fire In the end and sank while at anchor loading nitrate at Pisagua on Christmas Eve 1900. Ref source Clyde ships 20199.
