🏛️ Exceptional Milanese Bronze Relief c.1891 — Porta Ravizza & Co — Renaissance Revival Heraldry Castello Sforzesco Wall Sculpture

The closing decades of the 19th century in Milan witnessed a powerful rediscovery of the city’s Renaissance identity—a cultural resurgence driven by civic pride, archaeological scholarship, and a renewed appreciation for Lombardy’s quattrocento heritage. Among the most evocative artefacts of this movement is the high-relief bronze plaque produced by Porta Ravizza & Co., circa 1891, celebrating the restoration and historic reintegration of Castello Sforzesco. Rich in symbolism, heraldry, and architectural fidelity, the plaque functions simultaneously as a commemorative object and a Renaissance Revival intellectual exercise.

🏰 Milan Reclaims Its Past: The Restoration of Castello Sforzesco

Once home to the Visconti and Sforza dynasties—and later a stronghold for French, Spanish, Austrian, and Napoleonic authorities—Castello Sforzesco stands as one of Milan’s most historically charged monuments. Its transfer to municipal ownership in 1863 (MDCCCLXIII) initiated a transformative restoration programme that culminated in the 1890s, with 1894 (MDCCCXCIV) marking its zenith.

The plaque’s inscription, POST FATA RESURGO (“After death, I rise again”), captures the symbolism of this architectural rebirth. It is not simply a decorative panel—it is a proclamation of cultural renewal.

🏛️ Porta Ravizza & Co.: Milan’s Renaissance Revival Foundry

The signature “PORTA RAVIZZA & CO.” affirms the work’s Milanese origin and situates it within one of the city’s most capable late-19th-century foundries. Porta Ravizza specialized in architectural bronzes, commemorative medallions, and decorative arts aligned with the era’s historicist tastes.
The plaque’s 4 cm high relief is executed with real authority—crisp modelling, clean undercutting, and controlled textural differentiation that reveal both technical and artistic maturity.

🛡️🐍🦁 Sforza–Visconti Heraldry: Dynastic Identity in Bronze

At the heart of the composition lies the unified coat of arms of Milan’s ruling families:

1️⃣ Visconti Biscione (1st & 4th Quarters)

🐍 The legendary serpent swallowing (or birthing) a human figure—a potent emblem of ancient Milanese sovereignty.

2️⃣ Sforza Beast (2nd & 3rd Quarters)

🦁 A lion–griffin hybrid symbolizing military authority, territorial control, and ducal legitimacy.

This heraldic synthesis emerged from the 1441 marriage of Francesco Sforza and Bianca Maria Visconti, a political union that reshaped Milan’s power structure. The plaque’s heraldry intentionally recalls that epoch of civic consolidation.

🪙 Renaissance Revival Medallic Portraits

In the lower-right corner, two portrait medallions evoke the sculptural language of quattrocento medalists:

  • Francesco I Sforza — founder of the Sforza dynasty

  • Galeazzo Maria Sforza — Renaissance patron associated with artistic and architectural activity at the castle

These portraits root the object firmly within Milan’s humanist tradition, reflecting the 19th-century reverence for Lombardy’s early Renaissance court culture.

🌞 Architectural & Symbolic Programme

The plaque’s imagery is a deliberate blend of allegory and topographical accuracy:

  • 🌞 Sunburst motif — symbol of civic regeneration

  • 🏰 Detailed depiction of Castello Sforzesco — rendered with architectural precision

  • 🎖️ Banners, trophies, and martial ornaments — recalling the castle’s centuries of military significance

It is a visual statement of Milan’s historical authority, cast in bronze at a moment when the city sought to reclaim its past.

🌳 Original Tiger Oak Frame

The bronze remains housed in its period Tiger Oak frame, valued for its expressive grain figure, warm coloration, and durable structure. The frame’s material and profile align with late-19th-century Milanese decorative sensibilities and create a harmonious dialogue with the bronze surface.

📏 Dimensions

Framed: 36.5 cm (W) × 27 cm (H)
Relief Depth: 4 cm

These dimensions confirm the object’s ideal scale for domestic, gallery, or institutional wall display—substantial enough to command visual focus while maintaining the intimacy characteristic of 19th-century commemorative bronzes.
