Introduction

A wonderfully atmospheric Victorian English School painting depicting cows and sheep sheltering peacefully within a traditional farmer’s barn.

Dating to circa 1850, this attractive pastoral study is catalogued as Follower of Thomas Sidney Cooper, reflecting its close relationship to the animal-painting tradition established by one of the foremost British livestock painters of the 19th century.

A brown cow forms the principal focus of the composition, accompanied by three sheep and a black-and-white cow resting comfortably within the rustic interior.

Thomas Sidney Cooper RA (1803–1902) occupies an important position within the history of British animal painting.

Born in Canterbury, he rose from relatively modest beginnings to become a highly respected Royal Academician, renowned for his sensitive and technically accomplished depictions of cattle and sheep.

His artistic development was significantly shaped by his period in Brussels and his friendship with fellow animal painter Eugène Verboeckhoven. His later return to England established the mature phase of his career, during which his paintings became closely associated with the landscapes and agricultural life of Britain.

Cooper's ability to give livestock individuality and presence earned him enormous popularity, and his influence extended well beyond his own signed works.

This painting reflects that broader Victorian tradition through its attention to animal anatomy, pastoral setting, naturalistic observation and quiet rural atmosphere.

Condition Report

Overall acceptable antique condition consistent with age.

The painting remains on its original unlined canvas and displays fine craquelure consistent with age.

There are areas of paint touch-up to the edges and background, together with retouching to the brown cow. A small repair patch is present to the reverse.

There is also a small tear to the canvas, with areas of paint loss and paint flaking around the edges.

Stretcher lines are visible through areas of the canvas.

The later giltwood frame exhibits various age-related areas of wear and loss which contribute to its established antique character.
