Introduction
Three terriers suddenly become still. Their attention has been caught by something hidden within the shadows of a rustic barn, and Edward Armfield chooses this moment of suspended action as the subject of A Sharp Lookout.
This original 19th century British oil painting demonstrates the narrative appeal that made working-dog subjects so successful within Victorian sporting art. Nothing needs to be shown of the quarry itself. The expressions, posture and collective concentration of the terriers tell the story.
Armfield gives each animal a distinct presence. Their differently marked coats emerge against the subdued browns and ochres of the barn, while the darker interior concentrates the eye upon the dogs themselves.
The resulting painting operates on two levels: as an appealing study of three terriers and as a small piece of Victorian rural storytelling.

The Subject — Victorian Terriers on A Sharp Lookout
Terriers were not merely fashionable companions in 19th century Britain. On farms and around stables, barns and yards they performed the practical task of controlling rats and other vermin.
That working role provided Victorian animal painters with particularly animated subject matter.
Here Armfield avoids depicting a violent conclusion. Instead, he selects the instant in which the dogs have apparently discovered the presence of their quarry.
Their attention converges upon something outside the viewer’s sight. This withholding of the quarry is important to the composition: it creates suspense and encourages the viewer to search the scene alongside the animals.
The painting consequently belongs not only to British sporting art but also to the Victorian tradition of anecdotal genre painting, where a recognisable episode is condensed into a single expressive moment.

Bonhams has also recorded Armfield paintings centred upon terriers and ratting subjects.
Of additional interest is the historic appearance on the art market of another Edward Armfield composition using the title A Sharp Lookout.
That painting is a separate composition and should not be confused with the present work. Its significance lies instead in demonstrating the documented association of this evocative title with Armfield’s sporting subjects.
