Catalogue Note
Wilson places the Hereford in a clear lateral pose, parallel to the picture plane. This arrangement provides an uninterrupted view of the animal’s substantial body, distinctive colouring and measured stance.
The bull is characterised by a white face and deep reddish-brown coat. Its broad physical form fills the foreground, lending the composition a quiet monumentality appropriate to a prized agricultural animal.
Beyond the bull, the landscape recedes through open pasture towards a Georgian-style house. The building serves as an effective visual reference to traditional estate portraiture, in which valuable livestock was commonly shown against cultivated land or the owner’s country residence. There is no current evidence that it represents a particular identifiable property.
The low horizon allows the softly handled sky to occupy a significant part of the composition. Muted greens, earthy browns and warm ochres create a balanced rural palette suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

The canvas appears stable and remains adequately tensioned. No obvious tears or significant structural repairs have been observed during normal visual inspection.
Fine craquelure is visible in areas of the paint layer, most noticeably within darker passages. The cause has not been technically investigated and may be connected with the combination, drying or ageing of the painting materials. The surface currently appears generally stable, but any development of raised, lifting or loose paint should be referred to a qualified conservator.
