Introduction

A significant and extensively documented marine oil painting by John Bentham-Dinsdale (1927–2008), portraying Mischief leading Atalanta at the start of the 1881 America’s Cup.

Painted circa 1981, the composition recreates one of the most important early contests in international yachting history. The American defender Mischief advances beneath towering cream sails while the Canadian challenger Atalanta follows astern.

Around the racing yachts, steam-powered excursion vessels, committee boats and spectator craft gather across the water, conveying the public excitement and international prestige associated with the America’s Cup during the Victorian era.

Catalogue Note

Bentham-Dinsdale presents the start of the 1881 America’s Cup as a spectacle of maritime elegance, technical innovation and intense international competition.

Mischief occupies the foreground, her long black hull moving through the water beneath luminous ivory sails. Atalanta follows in the middle distance, establishing the developing contest and guiding the eye deeper into the composition.

The artist’s architectural background is evident throughout. Rigging, spars, hull forms and sail plans are described with clarity and precision, reflecting the considerable research that underpinned his most accomplished maritime works.

The surrounding steam vessels contribute scale, motion and historical context. Their dark hulls, funnels and contrasting superstructures form a busy spectator fleet, demonstrating the enormous attention attracted by America’s Cup racing during the late nineteenth century.

Warm ivory sails are set against a luminous sky of pale blue, pearl grey and soft cream. Across the water, cobalt blue, slate and silvery tones are enlivened by small white highlights suggesting reflected light and movement.

The Competing Yachts

Mischief was designed by the American naval architect Archibald Cary Smith and built by Harlan & Hollingsworth of Wilmington, Delaware.

Her iron construction was highly unusual at a time when most racing yachts were built from wood. This innovative construction led to her well-known nickname, “The Iron Pot”.

Owned by Joseph Richard Busk and commanded by Nathanael “Than” Clock, Mischief defended the America’s Cup against the Canadian yacht Atalanta.

Atalanta was owned by Alexander Cuthbert and represented the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club. Her appearance in the race reflected the growing international importance of competitive yacht design during the late nineteenth century.

The artist portrays the yachts surrounded by steam-powered spectator and official vessels, emphasising the contrast between traditional sail and the rapidly advancing industrial technology of the Victorian era.

Historical Context

The fifth America’s Cup was contested off New York Harbour in 1881.

The competition had already become an internationally recognised test of yacht design, sailing skill and technological innovation. It also carried considerable national prestige for the clubs, owners, designers and shipbuilders involved.

Mischief’s successful defence maintained American possession of the Cup and established her place among the competition’s notable early defenders.

The painting was produced approximately a century after the event and reflects Bentham-Dinsdale’s longstanding interest in reconstructing significant episodes from maritime history through careful documentary research.

The Artist

John Bentham-Dinsdale (1927–2008) was a leading twentieth-century British marine painter whose work focused upon historic sailing vessels, yacht racing, naval engagements, tea clippers and significant maritime events.

His original training in architecture gave him a particularly strong command of proportion, structure and technical detail. These skills are evident in his precise treatment of rigging, sail plans and hull construction.

Bentham-Dinsdale combined this technical knowledge with atmospheric skies, carefully observed water and a strong sense of maritime drama. His paintings therefore function both as decorative works of art and as researched interpretations of historic vessels and events.

The principal inscription reads:

“The America’s Cup 1881
The start of the race

followed by the challenger Atlanta.”

The yacht’s official name was Atalanta. The artist’s use of “Atlanta” appears to represent a minor spelling variation.

Bentham-Dinsdale also records that Mischief was built by Harlan & Hollingsworth at Wilmington, Delaware.

The artist’s technical notes include the following approximate measurements:

• Cabin trunk: 30 feet.
• Cockpit length: 9 feet.
• Mast to hounds: 63 feet 6 inches.

The inscription further refers to Cup trials involving the sloops Hildegard and Pocahontas.
