Introduction
Terry Kane transforms a hillside settlement into an expressive arrangement of colour, architecture and memory in this commanding oil painting from 2002.
Warm-roofed houses descend through the composition in tightly assembled tiers. A slender church spire emerges at the centre, while a bridge crosses the valley and a luminous stream moves between the trees and buildings below.
The view is familiar but intentionally unstable. Perspective is compressed, façades overlap and the landscape appears to have been remembered and reconstructed rather than recorded directly. This balance between recognisable place and expressive invention gives the painting much of its emotional power.

Catalogue Note
Kane organises the village through repeated geometric rhythms. Roofs, walls and windows appear as interlocking planes, causing the architecture to advance across the canvas rather than recede through conventional perspective.
The central church spire stabilises the composition and introduces a strong vertical emphasis. Below it, the bridge and waterway create directional movement through the valley.
Warm reds and ochres bring the rooftops forward, while deep green trees create weight and enclosure around the buildings. Paler passages in the houses and water open the composition and prevent the densely stacked forms from becoming visually oppressive.
Kane softens the strict geometry with rounded foliage and atmospheric tonal modelling. This combination of structure and feeling gives the painting a character that is simultaneously architectural, decorative and emotionally charged.
The large upright format intensifies the sense of a village rising and descending across the hillside. At almost one metre high, the canvas possesses significant presence while retaining the immediacy of an artist’s studio work.
Style And Artistic Context
The painting demonstrates Kane’s engagement with two important strands of European modernism.
Its angled buildings, compressed depth and interlocking planes reflect the influence of Cubism. Its subjective colour, energetic handling and emotionally heightened atmosphere align more closely with Expressionism.
Published commentary on Kane’s work identifies Picasso, the Cubists and the German Expressionists among his formative influences. The present painting provides a compelling example of how he absorbed these ideas into his own individual language.
It is not a copy after Picasso and does not reproduce a recognised Picasso composition. Instead, it reflects the broader legacy of Cubist pictorial construction within Kane’s independent work.
About Terry Kane
Terry Kane was a Liverpool painter whose work developed outside the conventional structures of the commercial metropolitan art world.
Working primarily in oils, often on canvas, he created expressive paintings centred upon people, buildings and places. His imagery was characterised by assured brushwork, simplified construction and a deeply personal use of colour.
Kane exhibited in Liverpool for several years, with venues including the Liverpool Academy of Arts and Urban Coffee Lounge.
Following his death in April 2015, a retrospective exhibition took place at Bridewell Studios in Liverpool from 5 to 10 October of that year. His paintings were shown again in 2016 at Misty 21 Gallery.
Liverpool’s Nerve arts magazine subsequently published a tribute by Gayna Rose Madder, reflecting upon Kane’s individuality and his place within the city’s independent artistic culture.

Presentation
The painting is offered without an outer frame and remains mounted on its wooden stretcher.
A hanging wire is present on the reverse. It can therefore be displayed in its current studio presentation or placed within a bespoke frame selected to complement its setting.
Condition Report
The canvas remains stretched and presents effectively at normal viewing distance.
Foxing-type spotting and general age-related surface marks are present. Small white paint stains can be seen along the side of the canvas.
The reverse has handling and studio marks, exposed staples and a fitted hanging wire. These characteristics are consistent with an unframed studio canvas of its period.
