Catalogue Note

Hastings organises the cityscape around the powerful vertical relationship between the castle and fountain.

The fortress stretches across the upper portion of the canvas, its walls illuminated by touches of golden ochre and warm sienna. Deep greys and earth colours articulate the volcanic rock beneath, visually anchoring the castle above the gardens.

The Ross Fountain provides a more delicate counterpoint. Its ornate form is defined through rhythmic touches of bronze, gold and shadow, contrasting with the broad architectural mass of the castle.

Surrounding foliage is developed through overlapping greens. Darker layers establish depth and enclosure, while brighter touches suggest the gradual arrival of morning light across Princes Street Gardens.

The Artist

Vikki Hastings is a contemporary Scottish painter working from Kilmarnock in Ayrshire.

She completed an HNC in Environmental Fine Art at Reid Kerr College in Paisley before studying Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating with a BA Honours degree in 2011.

Hastings’ practice encompasses landscapes, townscapes, figures, animals and narrative subjects. Although her paintings often begin with recognisable people or places, she places equal importance upon the physical qualities of paint, expressive colour and visible mark-making.

Her exhibited work has appeared at Edinburgh College of Art, Moray Art Centre, Chelsea Old Town Hall and several galleries and exhibition venues in Ayrshire.

In Crown of the Capital at Dawn, architectural observation is combined with the artist’s characteristic interest in colour and atmosphere. The historic view remains identifiable, but its emotional effect is shaped through heightened dawn light and painterly surface.
