🖌 Subject & Medium

  • Title & Subject:Portrait of Sir Philip Grey Egerton, 15th Baronet (1885–1962) in Evening Red Hunting Jacket with White Bow Tie,” circa 1950. This commanding half-length portrait features Sir Philip, a prominent British aristocrat and landowner, captured front-facing in his distinguished red evening hunting coat, white shirt, bow tie, and pocket square. His confident, warm smile, iconic glasses, bald crown with neatly combed side hair, and dignified expression are painted with exceptional care and lifelike accuracy.

  • Medium: Oil on canvas, a classic medium prized for its luminous finish, depth, and ability to convey refined textures.

🎨 Composition & Technique

The artist places Sir Philip against a soft, neutral grey backdrop that subtly recedes, allowing the vivid scarlet red of his hunting coat and the bright white of his shirt and bow tie to stand out dramatically. This restrained background brings full attention to the sitter’s personality and commanding presence.

The brushwork is nuanced and confident:

  • Smooth blending across the facial features captures the softness of skin, the shine of his glasses, and the warmth of his slightly flushed cheeks.

  • Delicate, precise strokes shape the fine moustache, carefully modelled bald crown, and the sculpted folds of his elegant eveningwear.

  • Bolder, structured strokes define the rich, textured fabric of the red coat, creating contrast and presence.

The color palette is masterfully balanced between the warm reds and creams of his attire and the cool greys of the background, giving the portrait a timeless, formal, and dignified atmosphere. Painted in the style of Sir Herbert James Gunn, one of Britain’s most respected mid-20th-century portraitists, this work radiates both aristocratic prestige and painterly charm.
