Introduction
This expressive mid-Victorian brass door knocker combines naturalistic sculpture with functional architectural design.
A delicately modelled hand, complete with defined knuckles, fingernails, ring and decorative cuff, grasps a substantial horizontal bar. When lifted and released, the bar strikes against a separate scallop-shell plate ornamented with deep radiating grooves.
Dating from approximately 1860, the knocker has acquired a naturally aged surface, with darker patination in recessed areas and warm polished highlights across its most frequently handled features.
The design is traditionally called a “doctor’s door knocker,” a name commonly associated with distinctive knockers reputedly fitted to Victorian physicians’ residences. This example is further reported to have come from a doctor’s entrance door near Highgrove in Gloucestershire.
