✍️ From Scholar’s Hands: A 1919 Hand-Carved Crest of Rivington & Blackrod Grammar School

🏰 A Century-Old Masterpiece of British Craftsmanship

This remarkable wall plaque is an original Arts & Crafts Revival hand-carved crest, created in 1919–1920 at Rivington & Blackrod Grammar School (Lancashire, England). Far more than a decorative souvenir, it is a unique artifact carved by hand with precision, embodying history, symbolism, and provenance.

📜 Historic Origins of Rivington & Blackrod Grammar School

Founded in 1566 under Queen Elizabeth I’s charter 👑, the school was established by Bishop James Pilkington, a leading figure of the English Reformation. Its crest reflects both family heraldry and ecclesiastical tradition.

  • Mitre (bishop’s headdress): Symbol of religious authority and Christian foundation.

  • Star: Represents enlightenment through faith and learning.

  • Initials RBGS: Rivington & Blackrod Grammar School, uniting heritage and identity.

Together, these elements embody centuries of scholarship and enduring values.

✍️ A Student’s Handiwork, 1919–1920

This plaque was carved by Herbert Robert Southworth, then only 14 years old and a student at RBGS. His name, age, and the date are inscribed on the reverse, accompanied by a provenance label confirming its authenticity.

The carving preserves both the solemnity of heraldry and the individuality of youthful craftsmanship, making it both an art object and a historical document — truly from scholar’s hands.

🎨 Design & Carving Style

  • Form: Rectangular with softened edges for a refined presence.

  • Relief: Carved in low relief (bas-relief), allowing subtle depth and shadow.

  • Symbolism: Mitre, star, and initials RBGS executed with clarity and restraint.

  • Finish: Warm natural patina, enhanced by over a century of careful preservation.

Its balance of dignity and decorative charm reflects early 20th-century British artistry.
