👑 Portrait of Lady Lucy Montagu, Countess of Guilford C1734
👑 Portrait of Lady Lucy Montagu, Countess of Guilford – Elegant 18th Century Oil, Circle of John Vanderbank (c.1734)
🎯 Subject & Medium:
A graceful and historically significant early 18th-century oil on canvas portrait, this captivating work features Lady Lucy Montagu (1709–1734)—later Countess of Guilford—portrayed in a classical oval quarter-length profile. Her gaze meets the viewer with composed elegance, projecting the poise, refinement, and noble presence befitting her aristocratic standing.
She is dressed in a striking black silk gown, tastefully low-cut and accented by crimson and white slashed ribbon sleeves. Her powdered coiffure is adorned with a delicate plumed feather headpiece, entwined with strands of pearls—a visual expression of both fashion and femininity. With a fair complexion, flushed cheeks, blue-grey eyes, and cherry-red lips, her portrait captures an ideal of Georgian beauty.
🖌️ Medium: Oil on canvas
📅 Date: Circa 1734
🎨 Composition & Technique:
The sitter is positioned before a warm, neutral chiaroscuro-style background in shades of burnished gold and umber, which helps illuminate her features and attire with softness and subtle drama. The oval format focuses the composition, lending a quiet formality and intimacy.
Executed in the Circle of John Vanderbank, the artist applies a controlled colour palette with mastery: rich blacks, pearly whites, soft creams, and touches of crimson and silver-grey are used with painterly elegance. The smooth brushwork on the skin contrasts with the slightly more textured handling of the fabric, lending life and realism to both flesh and finery.
Her facial features are handled with refined transitions, especially around the cheeks, neckline, and brow. The luminous handling of the eyes and lips creates a direct connection with the viewer. The rendering of the fabric is particularly well done—light catching subtly on the sheen of her gown and the curve of her shoulders.
This portrait not only captures her outward beauty but speaks to the sitter’s social rank and composed intelligence, qualities often seen in portraits of the Georgian elite.
👑 About the Sitter – Lady Lucy Montagu, Countess of Guilford (1709–1734):
The daughter of George Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax, Lady Lucy Montagu married Francis North, later 1st Earl of Guilford, becoming Lady Lucy North. She was the mother of Frederick North, Lord North, the Prime Minister who governed Britain during the American Revolutionary War under King George III.
Lucy Montagu’s life was tragically short—she died following the birth of her second child in 1734—but her historical and genealogical significance is immense. Her legacy endures in British political history, aristocratic lineage, and fine portraiture.
Other recorded portraits of her include a three-quarter-length portrait by Sir Godfrey Kneller (sold at Christie's, 1968), and a full-length portrait by Enoch Seeman, currently in a private collection.
